About the Book
"This poetic board book surveys various types of homes in nature, spotlighting their differences but concluding with the elements common to all: love and family"--Book Synopsis
Homes throughout the natural world may be found in any manner of place, be made of any number of materials, and be permanent or temporary. As this poetic, illustrated board book makes the circuit from "big or little, below or above," the feature that seems to link all kinds of homes--including those of humans--is that they are places "where we love." Young readers and observers will enjoy naming the various animals and making comparisons among the types of dwellings as a positive sense of belonging is reinforced.Review Quotes
A Home Like This, by Laura Purdie Salas perfectly painted by Miriam Nerlove, is a board book with a simple rhyming text but rich in detail of both word and picture. A picture of a mother bird on one side of the page, has her sitting in a nest of baby chicks eager for food. The text reads: "A home can be open to cloud and sky...or be sheltered snug, and dry.
In another view of the natural world, A Home Like This contrasts the different ways a home can be: open, sheltered, busy, quiet, sturdy to last, or remade each day. Each spread presents a close-up of the creature whose shelter/home is featured on the opposite page. Animals shown include birds, a snake, bees, frogs, beavers, orangutans, and an assortment of animals on the last spread, including humans, shown below.
The poetic narrative concludes that whatever a home may be, it's the place "where we love." The ending makes the leap to the human realm while also showing a polar bear mama nuzzling her cub, creating a cozy, snuggly ending. Nerlove's realistic art invites close observation and is quite huggable.
"A stunning exploration of animal habitats." --School Library Journal
"Simple [and] heartfelt... Teachers may want to use this book as an introduction to a unit on homes or animal dwellings." --Children's Literature
"Original, sturdy, fun..." --Midwest Book Review
