For years, Marietta Stone has harbored a secret infatuation for the handsome Frederick Finch and has poured out her deepest feelings in a series of passionate love letters that she keeps in a locked drawer. But when Marietta's private letters are accidentally delivered to Frederick's house, she must retrieve them immediately before they fall into the wrong hands. If the letters were read by anyone else, the resulting scandal could jeopardize her reputation. Gerard Hartwell has no time for infatuations, courtship, or even love. He must find a wife with a substantial inheritance if he wishes to save his late father's bankrupt estate. When he accidentally discovers Marietta's love letters at his cousin Frederick's estate, he strikes a bargain with her. If she helps him court her older sister, Anne, he will return the letters and help Marietta win Frederick's heart. Marietta agrees, and the two quickly pretend to be courting in order to spend time with their individual love interests. But can he persuade Marietta to give him a chance when her heart might belong to another man? "--

1828, the London countryside

Yet, what appeared to be a straightforward bargain becomes complicated when Gerard realizes that the more time he spends with Marietta, the more he wishes he could court her for real. But can he persuade Marietta to give him a chance when her heart might belong to another man?

Review Quotes

"Readers will enjoy how the madcap antics turn into a sweet romance with lessons about knowing, and trusting, one's own heart."-- "Historical Novel Society" (5/3/2024 12:00:00 AM)

"Readers will enjoy how Etta and Gerard try to detangle themselves from the messiness of their lives and loves in Wright's (Windsong Manor) latest, reminiscent of the humor and romantic hoax in Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before."-- "Library Journal"

"The fake courtship takes some interesting twists. Wright's latest feel-good Regency romance... will please all who love the traditions of the genre."-- "Booklist"

About the Author

Julie Wright was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She wrote her first book when she was fifteen after an English teacher told her she would never be a writer. Since then, she's written twenty-six novels and ten novellas. Julie is a two-time winner of the Whitney Award for best romance with her books Cross My Heart and Lies Jane Austen Told Me and is a Crown Heart recipient. Her book Death Thieves was a Whitney finalist. Her books have received several starred reviews and have been listed in the American Library Association's top ten romances of the year.

She's a sucker for almost all things nerdy: Doctor Who, Disneyland, the Marvel Universe, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, fairy tales, and Jane Austen. She believes in second chances, getting up and trying again, and the power of generosity and compassion.

She is surrounded by a loving and supportive family, one dog, and a varying number of houseplants (depending on attrition).

She loves writing, reading, traveling, hiking, snorkeling, playing with her family on the beach, and watching her husband make dinner.

This one was pretty cute. I loved the premise, that writing a letter one shouldn’t write, and then having the misfortune of that letter being accidentally sent, could cause an entire sequence of mishaps and questionable events to occur. Adorable. Etta and Gerard were both slow to figure things out for themselves, but I always love a good slow burn. Watching each of them slowly find delightful things about the other was so sweet. Could a few things in the book have been figured out with an honest conversation? Perhaps. But I genuinely found their predicaments to be real. Etta was impetuous and impulsive, Gerard was meticulous and forthright. And I loved what happened when they tried to mimic one another’s strengths. I also loved that they created problems and had to fix them, and it wasn’t all problems foisted upon them because of others (there’s some of that too, but mostly they have to fix their own quandaries). This is a quick read that I found charming and delightful. If you want something that is a little different, I’d recommend checking this one out. **many thanks to the publisher for the copy. All thoughts are my own.
