Description

About the Book

In the borderlands of 1770 West Virginia there is no place for finer feelings. Charged with keeping the peace with local tribes, a hero of the French and Indian War is determined to stay free of romantic entanglement--until he meets a frontier maiden who just might be able to change his mind.

Book Synopsis

Unflinching and plainspoken, Tessa Swan is not your typical 18th-century woman. Born and bred on the western Virginia frontier along with her five brothers, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Quiet and courageous, Clay Tygart is not your typical 18th-century man. Raised by Lenape Indians, he returns a hero from the French and Indian War to the fort that bears his name, bringing with him Tessa's long-lost friend, Keturah, who disappeared from the settlement years earlier.

Determined to avoid any romantic entanglements as fort commander, Clay remains aloof whenever he encounters the lovely Tessa. But when circumstances force Clay's hand--and heart--the stage is set for one very private and one very public reckoning.

Intense, evocative, and laced with intricate historical details that bring the past to life, An Uncommon Woman will transport you to the picturesque and dangerous western Virginia mountains of 1770.

From the Back Cover

"Peopled with characters as resilient and compelling as the terrain they inhabit, An Uncommon Woman is an engaging story that had me up late turning pages."--Lori Benton, Christy Award-winning author of The King's Mercy

Wonderful Historical Fiction!

This is a story that I will remember and it is a book that I will read again! Author Laura Frantz swept me away with Clay and Tessa's adventure and as I read it, I kept thinking "Movie, movie, this needs to be movie." I grew up watching TV westerns and An Uncommon Woman has it all: a hero who was kidnapped by Indians, returned to civilization, and is now the commander of Fort Tygart; a brave but very stubborn young girl who has turned into a true frontier woman; and the hardships of frontier life in 1770. Clay Tygart is very hesitant but he soon experiences a strong attraction to Tessa Swan and she also feels their connection but their relationship faces many obstacles. Frantz's ability to paint with words illustrates the differences in courtship then and now and she also paints a vivid description of 18th century Virginia and the dangers that were always present. Best of all, however, she offers us a view of the faith and determination that was needed to survive during those perilous times. If you enjoy Christian historical fiction filled with danger, adventure, and romance, you will certainly want to read An Uncommon Woman by Laura Frantz. It is indeed a keeper! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation to post a review and I am voluntarily sharing my own thoughts.

Home Run Historical

Laura Frantz is at the top of her game as she hit it out of the ballpark. She captures the Historical period of the late 1700’s in western Virginia with seamless perfection. These courageous and strong people fought the elements, the land, as well as the Indians who were trying to preserve their people. Follow the River is one of my favorite books and this is now running side by side with it. The writing is so poetic that you are immersed in the characters and can feel their struggles, fear, and yes the sparks of romance blooming. Tessa Swan is a woman to admire, but the lesser character of her childhood friend Keturah became the true heroine in my opinion. She exemplified what true love for a friend meant. John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. I can’t sing the praises of this book enough, as if you love History coming to life and characters you will love then don’t miss out on this one. I didn’t want it to end. I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Laura Frantz= Dreamy, Stark Colonial Times

Babbling Becky L - 5 years ago
If Laura Frantz’s name is on it, that is enough to tell me I’m going to love a novel, and most probably, consider it a favorite. An Uncommon Woman is no exception. Ms. Frantz takes the reader back to colonial Virginia, but the far side of the Appalachians, where the Buckhannon River runs free and life is hard. At a time when the Colonies are bursting at their seams, some have traversed the mountains to make the wildlands their home. But with Indian tribes both mistreated and feared, life on the frontier is unstable at best. Laura Frantz has an enviable way with words that mesmerizes the reader as she paints a comprehensive word picture of the dangers of the forts established at this time. “How would I feel if” is the question I find myself asking when reading a Laura Frantz novel. One can’t help but be drawn into the lives of Tessa and her bereft family, who are honoring her pa by continuing the life he staked out for them. Yet Tessa remembers a fearful time in childhood that affected the whole community. She also longs to return to the East, a refined land she has never seen. Colonel Clay Tygart, for whom the fort is named, is an enigma both in appearance and personality. A “white Indian,” where will his loyalties lie when the Indian unrest breaks loose? The secondary characters of Keturah, Tessa’s brothers, Tessa’s ma and the neighbor fill in the background to help weave a taut, suspenseful narrative that exposes human prejudices for what they are. Vengeance-based feelings against people who might differ from oneself, held accountable for someone else’s actions. I wanted to cry at times, at others beg and plead with characters and whole groups of people to think more clearly, with forgiveness. This is a story of many loves. A few romantic. * Sigh. * Several familial, but each different depending on the character of the persons involved. One strong friendship that supersedes all, beautifully portraying that “friend that is closer than a brother.” I received a complimentary copy of this book. This in no way affects my opinions, which are solely my own.

Unique

This book was so good. I loved how unique the characters are. Tessa is one of a kind. She was raised in an area where watching your back was second nature, not that it doesn’t get to you. Their family has faced tragedy, and knows that something could happen again at any time. Being scared all the time can really wear on a body. Doing the best with the life she has, when news arrives of they legendary Clay Tygart making an appearance at the nearby fort, Tessa can’t help but become hopeful. Can Clay, a man once raised by Lenape Indians bring peace to an area that so desperately needs it? This story took me away to another place and time. I could feel myself holding my breath awaiting what might happen next. I felt the Swan families tension as they fought to protect what was theirs. I can’t imagine tragedy being a part of everyday life, but I know back then that it wasn’t an uncommon thing to face. I can’t comprehend living in fear as they often did, but also can appreciate their bravery and wanting better for their children than what poverty in a big city would give. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction. This book made me feel an array of emotions: from heartbreak, to joy, and I also felt their fear. I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishers and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Enthralling

An Uncommon Woman by Laura Frantz is an enthralling novel! Honestly, I couldn’t put it down! Tessa lives on the family homestead. She enjoys working with her family on their homestead despite the loss of her father to the Indian's amid the turmoil on the frontier. Her brothers keep her busy as she helps her mother. At 25 years old, there are not many marriage prospects. Oh how Tessa longs to visit the big city - specifically, Philadelphia. Clay has just returned from Philadelphia, where he was hailed as a war hero. Clay is ready to resume his duties at the Fort, and does not have any intention of finding love. But when his cook, Hester, plays matchmaker with her great niece.... This book is historical romantic fiction, set in the 1770's. You will be captivated by the story. For me, it was riveting and thought provoking! I recommend this work of fiction, even though some of the vocabulary was specific to the time period and a little more difficult to understand. Nonetheless, the story was an excellent, enjoyable read! I was given a free copy of An Uncommon Woman from the publisher for my honest review.

Wilderness Adventure

Whenever I read a book by Laura Frantz, I become lost in her world. Frantz’s descriptions of the wilderness and the day-to-day life are so vivid that they paint an imagery that goes beyond what a movie could portray. She must spend a lot of time researching history! I typically prefer the 1800s, but the way Laura Frantz brings the 1700s alive, I know I want to read every one she writes. Tessa’s story introduces many side characters that are so interesting they could have their own story, such as her friend Keturah. Maybe one day they will. Tygart’s background unfolds slowly throughout the book with an intriguing mix of Lenape and Quaker culture that makes me want to read the book again just to understand it better. As settlers develop land along the river, the local Lenape react with violence, kidnappings, and burning to try to chase them away. Some would-be settlers left, but more keep coming. An Uncommon Woman tells of Tessa Swan who has only known this life, always looking around for danger, but longs to know what town life might be one day. Tygart, the leader of their new fort, is unwillingly drawn to Tessa’s strength & character, but is afraid to get close because of his own past. An Uncommon Woman will take you on an adventure that will leave you longing for more of Laura Frantz’s wilderness. *I was provided an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.*

Beautiful Blend of Story and Character!

Rebecca Maney - 5 years ago
"All her life had been spent looking over her shoulder." Tessa Swan was an uncommon woman, living life deep within the mountains along the dangerous Virginia frontier; she was plainspoken, hard working, and lovely to look upon; occasionally allowing herself the small luxury of dreaming about a different sort of life, the kind where one did not have to fear if the next Indian attack might strike more tragedy among her family and friends. "The journey out was always more comfortable that the journey back." Colonel Clay Tygart was an uncommon man, having lived half of his life captive among the Lenape Indians before being traded back to his wealthy Quaker family; he much preferred wide open spaces to the refined social parlors of cities like Philadephia, so while he was inwardly relieved that he was on the the trail to Fort Tygart, he was also thankful that he had no attachments of the womanly sort to muddle his concentration. That was about to change. As Tessa and Clay deftly dance around their unspoken attraction; danger draws near, along with a hidden bent for revenge that becomes impossible to thwart. "Almighty God, help Thou me." Written in the author's unmistakable style, "An Uncommon Woman" is all absorbing with its lush descriptive langauge and distinctly heroic characters; penned with a perfect blend of masculinity and femininity in all things wild, scripted with a gentleness and gracefulness in all things meant to be. "For where thou art, there is the world itself . . . and where thou art not, desolation." I received a copy of this book from the author; the opinions stated above are entirely my own.
