Description

About the Book

Caught between the warring French and English on Canada's rugged shores in 1755, Sylvie Galant is forced from her Acadian home and family and is alone in colonial Virginia. Now the enemy soldier who once tore her world apart might be the key to restoring her shattered past.

Book Synopsis

In a land torn apart by conflict, can love mend the tattered pieces?

As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada's Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family--French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral--are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of Noël, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America's borderlands.

As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin. Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William's, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future.

"Frantz is a wordsmith extraordinaire who makes readers care about little-known episodes of history through her characters. This is one of her best novels yet."--Library Journal

"Frantz's atmospheric writing is easy to sink into. Her fans won't be disappointed."--
Publishers Weekly

"Frantz meticulously captures the violation of being forced from one's homeland in heartbreaking historical detail and crafts remarkable characters who are refined by trials and redeemed by choices."--
Booklist

Incredible journey. The British tried to wipe out the very existence of the Acadia people, nearly did. This story of a rare survivor is anguishing, touching, tense, endearing and very hard to put down. So easy to become immersed in the story. Fabulous characters, including big, strong, cunning fighting backwoods men who travel their own hard paths. Such an excellent read (have I said that enough?). Much as I wanted to see what happened, I didn't want it to end. I'm filing this under "places I'd like to live" and "characters I'd like to meet". I received this book free from the author, Revell Reads and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. #TheSeamstressOfAcadie #NetGalley #BooksYouCanFeelGoodAbout #Revell #ChristianHistoricalFiction #LauraFrantz

Unique History Coupled with a Beautiful Story of Healing

The Seamstress of Acadie by Laura Frantz is a beautiful work of Christian historical fiction. I did not know the history of the Acadian people and the atrocious things England did to them to gain their land. It was a joy to learn not only about the beauty and bounty of Acadie but of the character of the people who lived there. The Acadian characters in this story inspired me with their stewardship of their land and gifts and their unprejudiced love for others. I’m thankful for getting a glimpse of what it would look like to live in a community that is so Christ-minded! This story deals with heavily emotional topics. But despite many characters walking through incredible hardship, there is healing and hope to be found. As a reader, I couldn’t help but turn one page after another because I was so invested in Sylvie and Will’s story. (It was difficult not to think of them even when the book was closed!) Sylvie was so relatable that what hurt her heart, hurt mine, too. I adored her so much I couldn’t leave her for long, and by following along in her journey, I was blessed with a beautiful story of hope and redemption. Will is a force of nature. A talented warrior with a heart for humanity–a war battling in his own body. His strength and presence as a soldier was enough to make me swoon, but it was his extravagant love for others that made me fall for this ranger. The super slow-burn romance between him and Sylvie was complete perfection. Overall, I loved this story and blazed through this book as fast as possible (with small children). The history was unknown to me, and I’m so glad the author chose to tell about the people of Acadie. They will forever be within my heart. I highly recommend this title and hope you all enjoy The Seamstress of Acadie as much as I did! I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Beautiful Writing, Beautiful Story

5 out of 5 stars
Virginia - 1 year ago
Laura Frantz was introduced to me as an author about 5 years ago. Once I read one of here books, she quickly became one of my favorite authors. Her writing does not just tell a story, it paints a picture and invites you in. To fully enjoy reading her books, it is best to have time and space to fully appreciate all they have to offer. The Seamstress of Acadie, her newest novel, begins in Acadie during a tension-filled time. The idyllic home and family that the protagonist, Sylvie, has grown up in confronts war and uncertainty because of the French and English conflict over their land. The author takes time to set the scene and introduce Will, the unlikely hero, in the first part of the book. Although Sylvie and Will do not reconnect for quite some time, their initial connection carries strength and attraction and sets the stage for a slow, burning love to take root. The story itself takes you on a journey from Acadie to Virginia geographically; however, the beauty of Laura Frantz books often is seen in how her characters change, develop, and grow over time. As the story unfolds you seen Sylvie and Will's difficult circumstances refine them and draw them to faith and each other. They confront all kinds of conflict: political conflict, disease, and jealous suitors trying to keep them apart. The storyline keeps you up and turning the page even as your body says, "it's time to go to bed!" I highly recommend this beautiful story and this amazing author. I don't only recommend reading this book, but all her books- twice. They are like fine wine and steadfast marriages....they just get better with time and re-reads. There is quite simply, so much there to enjoy!!

The Seamstress of Acadie is a brilliant triumph that transports readers on a breathtaking journey of loss and love. In the beginning as the seasons change and we see Sylvie’s picturesque life, the reader falls in love with the land and people of Acadie. As tragedy strikes, readers grieve the losses of the Acadian people and hold their breath as Sylvie faces hardship. As hope is renewed for Sylvie in Virginia, her romance with William blossoms into a beautiful love story with the happiest of endings. Sylvie and William find true love and joy against all odds, and demonstrate a faith in God that is inspiring. Enriched by the author’s vast historical research, this tale depicts the truly horrific treatment of the Acadian people without dwelling in dark places. Instead, God’s light shines through this story and shows that, while we might not understand why we face trials in this broken world, the Lord is ever present and ever loving. This book is truly a masterpiece, and a story for the ages.

I loved this book! Author Laura Frantz transported me to a time of danger, intrigue, and tragedy, and I learned so much about a subject that was previously unknown to me. The Seamstress of Acadie is a testament to hard work, deep loyalty, and unshakable faith, as shown through a fictional tale that centers around Sylvie Galant, her brother Bleu, and Ranger Will Blackburn. These fantastic characters endure the forceful removal of Acadians from their homeland and I loved that there's also a reunion with characters that we've met before. Sylvie's fateful journey from Canada to Williamsburg, Virginia allows an encounter with Esmee Shaw and Captain Lennox, two beloved characters from Frantz's previous novel, A Heart Adrift. It's apparent that this author has a deep appreciation for the written word and that she also possesses the ability to mesmerize readers with her own words. Each chapter begins with a thought-provoking quotation and from there, the magic continues. I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy historical Christian romance! I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Revell through Interviews & Reviews for my honest opinion.

Captivating and immersive. I was absorbed by the rich prose and compelling history of the Acadians, in this winning new novel from Laura Frantz. Beautifully written, this story brings to life the difficult plight of the Acadians, a resourceful people torn from their land. Sylvie is a skilled seamstress, devoted sister and daughter. I admired her strength and how she held tight to the truth as well as her heart for Nolan and Rietta. Will Blackburn is a man of many skills, with a natural air of leadership. I liked his compassion for others, as well as his fair and generous treatment of others, giving them a chance at a better life. An immersive and evocative read, with a slow burn romance set against a wild and unforgiving young American frontier. A gripping read that was hard to put down, yet I wanted to savor every word. Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I absolutely loved this book! Laura Frantz once again crafted an unforgettable masterpiece! A remarkable tale that taught me about a historical event with the Acadian people and made me want to learn more! Laura’s expert research to make it historically accurate were greatly appreciated. It was a delightful surprise to see parallel characters from A Heart Adrift (another of Laura’s amazing five star reads). I was invested from the start in Sylvia Grant and with other characters that were painted throughout the book with depth of character and emotion giving me true care to what lay ahead. My heart was fully engulfed in this marvelous adventure torn between wanting to know what was ahead and not wanting it to end. This is a story of finding hope in trials, beauty coming from ashes, the value of community, trust, and purpose. The story is authentically beautiful making it hard to put down. Laura Frantz is true master of history’s adventures, slow burn sweet romance that isn’t over the top, and delightful faith building storylines. A true gem and a must read. I cannot recommend this book enough. I received this book for review on NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoy Laura Frantz's historical fiction stories, but my favorites are those set in and around Williamsburg. The female characters who ply a trade are most interesting whether it be a lighthouse keeper, lacemaker, chocolatier, or, as in this book, a seamstress. Sylvie Galant lived in Acadie, modern day Nova Scotia, in the mid-1700s, serving as a seamstress to the French Fort Beauséjour. She and her family fall victim to the eviction of Acadians by the English, in spite of their neutrality in the conflict with the French. The story tells of Sylvie's life after she and a few fellow Acadians were rescued when the ship they were placed on foundered in a storm off the Virginia coast. Frantz admittedly has written in some key characters who treat the Acadians as they should have been treated rather than as most Virginians treated them in actuality. That is the beauty of historical fiction, sometimes we can view events through a lens of what ifs. Of course the story includes a touch of romance with a brave hero, Major William Blackburn, a man of integrity and the conviction to do the right thing. I give The Seamstress of Acadie five stars and am grateful to have received a complimentary copy from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Oh my! this story just wrapped me up, held me captive and stole a piece of my heart. The story begins describing Sylvie’s idyllic everyday life in Acadia. I could picture her close family and beautiful land and orchards. But soon her family and lands and future were no more. And this is where the story begins to get very hard to read. But Laura dealt with the events quickly but thoroughly. Events like what happened in Acadia are so important to know and learn from. I so appreciate Laura and her research and how she wrapped history into her story. This is an emotional story of tragedy, heartache and finding hope again. It is a story of love - love of family, of our home, of our intended and of God. There are so many things that I loved about this book. I decided just to list them or this review might go on forever. •I loved the French words and phrases, it added to the authenticity of the story. • Sylvie and Will both were such great characters, I cared about them equally. • Oh Bleu.! Throughout the book I kept wondering where he was, he was intriguing. He and Sylvie's love for each other and connection made me love him. • I loved seeing the characters from A Heart Adrift spending a little time with them. •Sylvie chose the perfect name for the home property. I thought the way the end was resolved was perfect. • Oh the old prayer from Provence was so beautiful! •I enjoyed so that the story involved Williamsburg, I could just picture the scenes there. •I appreciated the author's notes at the end that gave some books for further reading on Acadia which I plan to seek out. After all this, I believe there is one major thread and the main thing I took from the story was 'Learning not to hold too tightly to the past'. For me as I get older, I think this is important. This world is not my home anyway. I was not ready for this book to end which makes this quote proven true. “The sweeter the moment, the faster it flees.” Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read this story. The opinions are entirely my own.

I was glad to get to read and review this book. I have always enjoyed books by Laura Frantz and this book did not disappoint. I really didn't know much about the Acadian people or how they got displaced. Laura Frantz brought a lot of the history of these people to light in a very engaging story. The main characters were very nicely fleshed out, they were believable and enjoyable to get to know. I was pleased to find a couple of characters from another book of hers that I had read and enjoyed. The story flowed well and there were very few, if any grammatical errors. This is important to me and can make or break a good story. I was given this book through the Revell Reads program. I am required to leave a short review but I am not required to leave a positive review. This review is totally my own thoughts and opinions. I give this book a solid 4 out of 5 star rating.

THREADS OF LOVE DURING WAR

“We are Neutrals. We only desire to farm and raise our families and honor God,” Sylvie reiterates in Laura Frantz’s novel, The Seamstress of Acadie. ~ Why ~ This four-hundred-and-sixteen-page paperback targets those interested in a historical romance set in the mid 1700s in Acadia, before it was called Nova Scotia. With no profanity, topics of abuse, illness, injury, war, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. While the beginning has a dedication, historical note, map, and glossary, the ending includes an author’s note, acknowledgments, and a biography with advertisements. In this tale beginning in Canada’s neutral Acadie, twenty-five-year-old Sylvie Galant’s idyllic life is turned upside down when war breaks out between the French and English, forcing the residents to be taken via ships to America, where they are unwanted and often hated. Although the young seamstress is warned by her brother and British Army Ranger William Blackburn, she finds herself alone and scared when she arrives in Williamsburg, Virginia. It is only when she realizes William’s true feelings does she wonder if her life can be complete. ~ Why ~ I enjoy novels where I learn about history, especially when it is well written. The author does an excellent job describing the frustrations and fears the Acadians dealt with while searching for a place to belong. I liked the references to Psalm 23 and how God is always with us, protecting and guiding us with His love. The individuals have depth and emotion, especially when dealing with politics and family traditions. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not like stories about being rejected and shunned may pass on this book. Although the French glossary is helpful, sometimes it is hard to understand words not included in it as one has to reread sentences several times to get the gist of their meanings. With many characters, initially it is hard to keep track of them. While the Acadian map is simplistic and lacking detail, including a map of the fictional Rivanna would be welcomed. ~ Wish ~ I wish a list of characters were at the beginning of the book. Since the book has both Christian and Catholic beliefs, adding the true eternal plan of salvation would be encouraged. ~ Want ~ If you like a historical romance that sews two wandering individuals together with threads of love, commitment, and loyalty during war, you will be wrapped up in this engaging read. I received a review copy of this book courtesy of Revell through Interviews & Reviews, for my honest opinion.

What a beautifully written story!! Laura Frantz is an extremely talented wordsmith. It was a joy to read The Seamstress of Acadie. A breathtaking setting that the reader can instantly picture is where we meet Sylvie Galant and her close and hardworking farming family in Acadie in December of 1754. Author Laura Frantz does an amazing job bringing to life a tragic part of history from the Nova Scotia and surrounding areas of Canada. She captures both what did happen and what should have happened in creating this captivating example of excellent historical fiction. What I enjoyed most was 1) reading a story by such a talented author, her writing is a joy to read, 2) the story itself with the highs and absolute lows that Sylvie and her community experience, 3) the difficult faith journey, 4) learning about an event in history I knew nothing about, and 5) the sweet romance. It was a treat to see some of the characters from her novel A Heart Adrift make an appearance in this story. And I especially loved Will and Bleu in this story. What an amazing story of heartbreak and hope. I didn’t want it to end. I hope you check it out! Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for allowing me to read an early ebook version. All opinions are my own. I have pre-ordered a copy for my keeper shelf!

Laura Frantz skillfully and thoughtfully highlights the plight of the French Acadians in 1755 as British and French battle for this area. I had not known the history of this area so it was a fascinating, but also sad and thought-provoking, lesson. I loved the beauty, vastness, and accepting community of Acadie which seemed so different from the crowded and fear-riddled Williamsburg. Sylvie was a lovable character, full of grit despite heavy losses, grief, and anger. She grew tremendously in faith and maturity. Will was a gallant hero with a noble, loyal, and humble spirit. Their enemies to lovers romance was tender and endured time, distance, and a bit of adventure and danger. If you enjoy historical romance, you will definitely enjoy this well-written novel by Laura Frantz. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Revell Books and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
