Works great. Firmware process is terrible.

Card works great after tinkering with it for about an hour and moving it around in slots. My problem is with the firmware process to update the card. Unless I physically take out my hard drive, I'm unable to change the boot settings to enable the feature to upgrade during the boot process.

Dear Coaleyed, We certainly understand the inconvenience this may have caused if you had issues booting from a different device to update the firmware. To boot from a USB drive, or a different device, secured boot needs to be disabled inside the BIOS setup page. If you need further assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/. Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. Regards, Rodel ASUS Customer Loyalty

It works well but the installation is hard

The instruction manual for this hardware is of very poor quality. The installation procedure is far too complicated, going so far as to require the risky process of flashing the BIOS. Given that this particular card is advertised as a featured component for the associated motherboard, the installation should be much simpler and more direct.

Support for this product is minimal due to the complexity of getting it too work with multiple different mob's I am sure. The drivers for it almost work, but it appeara to be took reaource intensive.

Moar instructions would have been helpful! I had to make some guess BIOS changes to get it to be fully enabled. Would have been nice if the "optional" power connector cable was included!

The support for this card is a joke the drivers won’t load for windows 11 off the disk nor off the website I’ve spent a week trying to get it to work it sees the device but won’t allow it to work. I’m returning the z690e motherboard with this card as well I built a 4k dollar pc around thunderbolt only to have my studio delayed for over a week

If your system updates the card will atop working. Also sometimes the card will just stop working. It also took a lot of trial and error trying to find the proper download to make it work in the first place.

Great when it works - somewhat flakey

It’s helping me get my gaming PC to work with my LG UltraFine 5k display that uses USBC. I can get 4K to work with one Display port connection and 5K with 2 DisplayPort connections. It’s a little flakey, and I’m not sure if it’s a loose connector, but sometimes I have to reboot or replug to get it to turn on the monitor. Using 4k seems more stable and allows me to see it post to get into BIOS. Not sure it works at 5k in BIOS. I have a NVIDIA founders edition 3080 and an Asus Prime z690 using the thunderbolt header and one of the usb pins. I need to check if there are more drivers, or better bios settings. USB works, except when the monitor isn’t detected.

The board is solidly built, the install went without any issues. The driver CD installed without issues also. At present, the board is connected to just my video card, but there are plans for future use with other equipment. The location is perfect on the MB.

One FATAL flaw makes it almost impossible to use.

The fatal flaw is this: the thunderbolt/usb-c connector doesn't hold...and in essences drops the soap. This is not a crude joke rather it is best visual metaphor I can give for this is... squeezing a wet bar of soap from one end and having it fly out of your hand. The cables will slide out of it SOO easily with the slightest cable wiggle. I have considered using duct tape or some form of contraption to keep it plugged in. I have a Caldigit Thunderbolt / USB 4 Element hub and a Samsung Usb-c T5 1TB drive plugged into this card. When my devices kept disconnecting and I couldn't get the hub to work at first there was something wrong with my hub. I tried it on my on my laptop, mac mini, and usb-c port on another PC, and on the USB c port on the motherboard I have in the case. They worked... so I swapped in a different device ( thunderbolt 3 device, Cal Digit TS3 Hub). I tried 2 different thunderbolt 3 cables and 2 different thunderbolt 4 cables of short to long lengths. I was about to give up when I was moving my PC back after maintenance and reconnecting cables when I heard the connect and disconnect sound on windows...upon a closer look and pushing all the cables in I found that cable had pushed itself out a 1-2 millimeters. I pushed the hub forward (a gentle pull toward the front of the desk, and the cable had a small movement and pushed itself out at a slight angle. All the USBC devices disconnected (alerted by an audio tone in windows), I pushed the cable back in, reloaded the software to the devices and they worked. Then I tested this theory with all the different cables and a different hub, same results. The irrefutable truth...the ports installed in this card are very flawed. They retention mechanism simply doesn't want to hold a cable in. I was hesitant about buying this card because the previous thunderbolt 3 generation did not have great reviews. For the moment I have my device attached to my desk with 3m command strips and double check the cable anytime I move my desk up and down or plug anything any into my hub. This card is not cheap...but since it is the only option for the mother board unless you get a very expensive board with built in thunderbolt... you don't have an another option. You COULD get a comparator board that has their own card option but you lose out on the premium ASUS board features and reliability we love so much. The card 'technically works', the install was so easy and intuitive...it is not good for work situations that require reliability and takes way more effort to use than the price justifies. So maybe wait for gen 2? I missed my amazon return window on it so I'm stuck with the card now :/

It should have been part of the motherboard internally, but the ThunderboltEX 4 add-in card works for intended motherboards.
