Description

The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky gains its distinctive character from being matured in two wood types. Over the period of maturation, it is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill European oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt, whilst the traditional casks soften and adds character and the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavor. On the nose there is sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry, layered with honey and vanilla. Taste is a smooth mellow single malt of beautifully combined flavors – nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry, all encompassed in a long and warming finish.

Best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with a splash of water to expand the flavor.

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Dufftown, Speyside, The Balvenie distillery has been handcrafting whisky for more than 130 years, notably the most handcrafted of single malts. Nowhere else can you find a distillery that grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional floor maltings and still employs a team of coopers to tend to the casks alongside a coppersmith to maintain the stills. With a team committed to ultimate craftsmanship, their dedicated characters pour their soul and obsession into every single bottle. This demonstrates that, whilst it takes skill to make something great, it takes true heart to make it extraordinary. And of course, Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie who presides over the all-important maturation process.

Founded in 1892 by William Grant, The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is produced by William Grant & Sons Ltd, an award-winning independent family-owned distiller and today run by his direct descendants. Each expression has a very individual taste, rich, luxuriously smooth and underpinned by the distinctively honeyed character of The Balvenie.

Handcrafted to be enjoyed responsibly.

This is the best scotch I’ve ever had. I am not normally a scotch person but this was a gift and it’s EXTREMELY smooth. I drank it neat and it went down easy. It’s a bit pricy but any decent scotch is.

Ok Scotch; not what I expected

I like sweeter, lighter whiskeys and have to be in the mood for peat. Sampled and fell in love with Balvenie Doublewood 17yr but since that is now discontinued I decided to try the 12 yr. Nose is pleasant and sweet. Initial impression is of sweet tea, honey and vanilla but it gets spicy real quick and stays through to the palette. The finish lingers and is complex despite having light legs and being light in the body. But the finish is predominantly peaty and smoky for me. If you enjoy spicy and mildly peaty Scotch's/Whiskys(keys) with a hint of sweet then this is likely for you. Its not a bad Scotch. Its just not my type of Scotch.

The last two bottles of double wood have been much darker than before. Much like the Caribbean cask color. I love The Balvenie 12 yo Double Wood over any other Balvenie bottling. But now a bit disappointing. Am I just getting older and eyesight and taste buds changing?

Love the smoothness of this scotch. I prefer my scotch neat but like to drink this with a few ice cubes. The port cask is what really brings out the notes in this scotch. It’s something different for sure. I only enjoy it on occasion.

Whiskey without the burn

I have drank a lot of American and Scotch whiskies and always lean towards a single malt Scotch. I was recently given a bottle of the Balvenie Double Wood 12 as a gift. With my first pour I expected to smell vanilla based on other reviews but I got nut. The taste revealed a comforting sweetness of spice and honey with a little bit of chewiness on the palate but surprisingly none of the typical "burn". This is an excellent scotch whiskey and will be a staple in my liquor closet. If you're unfamiliar with Scotch whiskies and looking for a gift for a friend you absolutely can't go wrong with this!

Amazing if you are an avid whiskey lover and want to try something a little nicer! Is very smooth with good flavor and is amazing on the rocks or straight! Great for a nice dinner party, and is one that will impress! Highly recommend. 10/10! Looking forward to trying the 30 Year when I get the chance!

Nothing particularly special about this single malt. Tastes fine and packaging is great, but where it shines is definitely its value for the price!

Balvenie 12 Year Doublewood

I've always bought and loved the Balvenie 12 Year Doublewood for many years. In the last month I've purchased 2 different bottles that have had a peaty/smoky smell and taste. This is very unusual..... Has the there been a change or a miss fill recently??? I do not like peat or smoke, just wondering what could be going on???

Old Fan disappointed with latest batches

I have been a fan of the Doublewood for at least 15 years and I have been able to rely on the consistent taste of the American oak and my beloved sherry oak profile. I am not a fan of the peat, although I've been know to imbibe a peated scotch from time to time. Normally I would easily have given the Doublewood five stars as it has stood out as my favorite single malt scotch over the years. Unfortunately the last three bottles have had a non-trivial amount of peated flavor which ruins the flavor profile for me. I don't know why this unwanted profile has been introduced but I suspect it has something to do with the increased popularity of my beloved elixir requiring an increased production; yet quantity does not translate into quality. I have experienced the same loss of consistency with other beloved bottles which have driven me away (i.e. The Macallan 12). After this 3rd bottle I will wait a year or two in hopes that I can have a dram of the Doublewood I have become accustomed to. I am hopeful that you can rectify this change in my go to bottle. I will now have to troll around to bottles of Abelour Double cask (closet I can find), Glenfiddich Solera 15, or the more pricey abelour a'bunadh or the Glendronach 15 (I heard that one was good, haven't tried it yet)
