Book Synopsis

"Before I Lie" is a fusion of Afrofuturistic poetry and confessional prose that makes honesty celestial. These pages don't just perform--they testify, before silence swallows what was never meant to be heard.
Dralandra Larkins stands trial between her present self and her wounded inner child. Through each stanza and story, with rhythmic cadence and lyrical precision, she breaks through layers of identity, trauma, beauty, womanhood, and resistance, daring to name everything she was told to hide. In a world that demanded her silence, she unearths what shame, expectation, and disillusionment tried to conceal. Her soul shows up in court and says, "I'm not asking to be believed. I just refuse to be buried." She must tell the truth about herself before she ever lies to you. The verdict? It just might set her free--and you, too.
This isn't just a book--it's a courtroom of memory and confession. And you? You're here to bear witness.
Experience the audiobook--narrated by the author for the full performance: unfiltered, unapologetic, unforgettable.

About the Author

Dralandra Larkins is a multi-genre writer, three-time award-winning spoken word poet, and the author of "Before I Lie" (2025). A teaching artist with COMPAS and art instructor at Now Make Art, her work blends rhythm, intimacy, and vulnerability to create a haven for healing and advocacy--rooted deeply in her background as a social worker. She has led healing-based writing workshops across Minnesota for organizations such as The Loft Literary Center, Perpich Center for Arts Education, Nexus Community Partners, The Bridge for Youth, Hennepin County, the St. Cloud School District, and the University of Minnesota's Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC). She also serves as a grant evaluator for the Minnesota State Arts Board and Youthprise and has judged numerous Minnesota Book Awards. Dralandra is the creator of the Pocket Poetry Dispenser at Next Chapter Booksellers in St. Paul, bringing poems to the public--one push at a time.
She is co-editor of "Rewilding Hope," "The Nations Underground: Writing With Our Ancestors," and "The Lost Lake Folk Opera (Vol. 10)."
