In Beyond the Gender Binary, poet, artist, and LGBTQIA+ rights advocate Alok Vaid-Menon deconstructs, demystifies, and reimagines the gender binary.

Pocket Change Collective is a series of small books with big ideas from today's leading activists and artists. In this installment, Beyond the Gender Binary, Alok Vaid-Menon challenges the world to see gender not in black and white, but in full color. Taking from their own experiences as a gender-nonconforming artist, they show us that gender is a malleable and creative form of expression. The only limit is your imagination.

Important Knowledge

Couldn’t love this more! It’s important to question societal expectations and why they exist, as binary gender norms are so new to humanity compared to history in general. Many cultures don’t abide by only two genders and this brings light to colonial ideologies and how harmful they can truly be. We want more like this!!

10/10 Reccomend!

This book was a great introduction to the what the gender binary is and why gender is a social construct. Alok Vaid- Menon is incredibly intelligent and they are so eloquent on speaking on both the culture and their own experiences with not fitting into the constructed gender binary. It was a quick read ( PS there’s also and audio book that’s a great listen narrated by Alok themself). This is a book that nurtures empathy and empowerment. I think truly anyone at high level and beyond can really learn from this book!( and many more of this series). And for anyone questioning, this book can be a positive step into a community of support. It’s certainly a start :)

Inaccurate, deeply flawed and entirely fiction

Captivating in that it is stunning to read a book so misleading. Question not your gender but instead question the p8rn addled brain of the adult that wrote this.

Loved Every Line

This book was so captivating, and in such a short time I was able to absorb so many important truths about gender diversity. I’m a cis woman and I still felt so seen. The amazing writer for this book has a beautiful way with words.
