The greatest thing about this tip is that it can be modified for the hike of the day. A 4-5 hour hike over dirt roads, use the rubber tip. A 14.5 hour hike "Rim-to-Rim" through the Grand Canyon (yes, I did that) put on the spike. Works great for any kind of day hike.

I have this Lee Valley Spike on one 6 year old Brazos stick, a combi spike on another, plain old rubber tips on a couple of others. I only take out the Lee Valley one for walks on unpaved hiking trails. It works very well for that, but I don't have much confidence in the little rubber replacement tip, and just pick a different stick if I think I'll be walking on pavement. But one helpful hint, if you just get an ordinary rubber crutch tip, you can easily slip it over the Lee Valley Spike rather than screwing on the replacement tip. It will protect your car upholstery or any spot where you put the stick at home, and it's even stable enough that you can walk with it that way in a pinch.

I bought 2 and retrofitted an old stick as well as one recently purchased. I'm not sure how having to swap out the rubber tip for the metal one will work out over time, rather than simply taking off a rubber it to expose a spike as with other models, but I like the workmanship and the tip.
solid

Well constructed. Feels solid, both the brass attached to the stick, and the tip threaded to the brass. Didn't really have a use for the rubber piece as I strictly use this for hiking trails. I will put silicone at the top of the brass sleeve though to keep water out of it . In a word, solid.

Got this for my wife's 5th wedding anniversary gift (wood is the traditional gift). We both Geo-cache and she loves both the design and obvious quality workmanship that went into the construction of this well crafted walking stick. Maybe now I'll get one for my next birthday.

Recently had surgery on my knee so I purchased a hickory walking stick with a Lee Vally Spike to assist my balance when walking the dog. The stick was also helpful to protect me from other dogs running into my leg as they visited my pup. Leg has improved but I still bring the stick on every walk. The brass tip assists me when walking up and down hills as I recover. Thank you for a beautiful functional product.

Very nicely made and very good looking. If you are going to use the rubber tip a lot (rubber tip and metal spike are interchangeable), you should probably order extra tips, as I expect that the rubber tip would wear quickly with hard usage. The metal spike appears very durable and shows no signs of wear after several hikes. There is a hole through the spike that lets you use a nail to torque the spike onto the brass receptacle for the tip and the spike shows no sign of loosening after several outing. Nice product.

I ordered to augment my collector's vine twisted hickory walking stick and I couldn't be happier with the quality and versatility that this item adds to an already superior walking stick. The padded tip attaches with a screw that is sufficiently long to firmly secure it. The spike is a quality metal that holds up well under the moderate use I put it through. The spike attaches to the hiking stick by means of it's threaded shaft. The shaft on the spike is shorter that expected compared to the screw used to secure the padded tip and only time will tell how well the spike will hold up. I highly recommend this product to anyone thinking of making a purchase as it is well worth the money.

I chose the Lee Valley Spike after speaking with a sales rep on the phone. My husband and I both have a pair of walking sticks. I am pleased with how well it holds up to mountain hikes but would suggest including a tiny wrench (for tightening through the hole or changing out tip). If my husband with not already have one of those little L shaped wrenches, I probably would have lost a tip by now.

The lee valley spike is a very high quality product. It hasn't slipped yet and grips everything from slick granite to mud and sand (obviously). The spike has a hole through it which can be used to put a small screwdriver through it to strongly tighten it. I definitely recommend this product to anyone.
