Cold Pursuit is absolutely amazing! River Ryland and Tony St. Clair are former FBI Behavioral Analysts, now partners in Private Investigations. Their missing person’s case becomes so much more. This book grabbed my attention from the start and didn’t let go! The author lets the reader feel the feelings of the characters. Cold Pursuit is fast paced and unputdownable! The faith thread is perfectly balanced with the rest of the story. I highly recommend Cold Pursuit!

Profiling a serial killer while being hunted by another one from their past. River Ryland and Tony St. Clair are former BAU profilers now working as private investigators because of an FBI case that went horribly wrong. Both are still recovering from the trauma of their past when they accept the case of a teen who has been missing for four years. Besides the trauma from her own life, River has moved in with her mom to help assist her with dealing with Alzheimer's disease. There is a strong faith element in this story with both characters and their relationship with God. The action is full of suspense and intrigue. I also like that we get insight into the mind of the serial killer as we experience what he is going through when he chooses to kill and the mental illness that he deals with.
Amazing new series - definitely 5 stars!

Nancy Mehl is a master at what she does and this book totally demonstrates why. From the moment I read the first page, I was hooked! River and Tony were easy to fall in love with because of their friendship and how they accepted one another’s flaw’s at the same time they complemented each other. In the story, Ex-FBI profilers River Ryland and Tony St.Clair start a private investigator agency and after a few days of waiting, were given their first case. They were approached by a grieving mom and were asked to find her missing son. They are definitely willing to use all their resources to help, but this won’t be easy because he’s been missing for four years. As they start unpeeling the layers of his life, they discover that things aren’t always what they seem and the answer they were looking for was closer than they thought. Full of faith, edge-of-your-seat suspense and surprising twists and turns, this is one book you aren’t going to want to miss! Absolutely a 5 star read. The only negative thing in the book, is that on the last page, there is a very short paragraph that creates a cliff-hanger ending and I have to wait until January 2024 to read book two!! I was given this book to read and review - all opinions and thoughts are my own

“Their first job is a cold case, but when the past comes back to haunt them, there’s a killer on the loose with River in their sights, set on finishing the job they started,” the back jacket states in Nancy Mehl’s novel, Cold Pursuit. ~ What ~ The first book of the Ryland + St. Clair series, this three-hundred-and-thirty-page advance reader copy targets those interested in a Christian contemporary suspense involving a pair of private investigators trying to track down a serial killer from their past. Using no profanity, the topics of drug use, molestation, mental health issues, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. In this current-day tale set in St. Louis, thirty-six-year-old River Ryland suffers from PTSD after almost dying catching a serial killer. With the help of prior FBI profiler Tony St. Clair, the two start a private investigation business with their first case to find out what happened to a mother’s son who went missing four years ago. As they dig deeper into the past by reading people, they wonder who they are not interrogating. ~ Why ~ I found it interesting learning about schizophrenia and synesthesia and how they are dealt with on a professional level. Most of the characters are written well and show valid emotions. I appreciate that the protagonists rely on the Almighty, praying for protection, wisdom, and support. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not like this story. Since it is about a serial killer and the murders he commits, some may not like the gory details. Others may not care for the mention of a psychic, but it is understated. ~ Wish ~ While I appreciate it reiterated that God loves us beyond our understanding, there was no true plan of salvation of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and rising from the dead. ~ Want ~ If you like a beginning story about a serial killer who uses his victims, this is a good start, but the ending of this first book offers no complete closure. Thanks to Bethany House and Interviews & Reviews for this complimentary book. I am under no obligation to give a positive review.

Oh my! Read this suspense over a weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve done that, but Nancy Mehl books have a way ensnaring me. Getting into the mind of a killer is always CREEPY, but it turns pages! In Cold Pursuit former FBI partners, Tony St. Clair and River Ryland are dealing with the effects of almost getting murdered by a serial killer. Even though they’ve sought a fresh start by opening up their own investigation firm in a different state, danger still lurks. (I mean, it’s a suspense after all.) It was exciting following Tony and River’s first case. Their search leads them to a school with some suspicious teachers and students and also connects them to a young man who suffers from Synesthesia. Interesting element. And, goodness, there’s a character twist I did NOT see coming! Loved getting to know the main characters. Their friendship is OH SO SWEET and so is River’s journey to peace. There’s space given to River’s relationship with her mom who suffers from the early stages of Alzheimer’s. I liked that relationships were a big part of the story. I also liked all the mentions of food. Yum! Definitely recommend if you like clean, faith-based suspense! This one felt like a slower-paced, not-as-scary Mehl book but still a 5-star read.

This story is disturbingly intense as the author fleshes out the mental and emotional state of the primary antagonist. This individual has not one, but two mental illnesses or disturbances. So it was not a pleasant, feel-good read from this particular standpoint. Then the story also involves more than one and possibly over-lapping criminal elements that create an sense of fright and mystery. And then there is the subplot of the female lead's mother's Alzheimer's disease and the care of her. Throughout the book the thread of faith in God is woven. Tony's faith in God and strong friendship (and deeply caring - romantic?) with River are ever present gently guiding and protecting her. The author's ability to paint word pictures of scenes, action, and emotions is beautifully displayed in this story. At the end of the book, while it reaches a joyful conclusion, there is a dangerous thread dangling that lets you know you want to read book two in the series so you can find out what else is in store for River and her friend and co-worker, Tony. I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

I've read several of this author's books and I'm always amazed with Nancy Mehl's ability to convey the workings of troubled minds! Cold Pursuit kept me fully engaged in the efforts to learn what really caused a teenager's disappearance several years ago. I loved watching the deepening friendship between former FBI partners River Ryland and Tony St. Clair. and I can only hope that a different relationship will be explored in the near future. This book has good versus evil. faltering faith versus deep belief, and a painful reminder that mental illness can trigger unimaginable acts. But, above all, Mehl offers the powerful affirmation that God is always with us! If you're looking for a psychological thriller filled with twists, turns, intense danger, and unending suspense, grab a copy of Cold Pursuit today. It will have you turning the pages and keenly anticipating the second book in the Ryland & St. Clair series! I received a complimentary copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Every time I read a serial killer book, I promise myself that I'll never read another one. Then Nancy Mehl, Lynette Eason, or another similarly gifted author will come out with a book that lures me into breaking that promise. As I read Cold Pursuit I kept asking why I always do this to myself, but when I got to the final chapter and took in the lesson that Mehl so deftly pulled together, I knew why. I do it because Mehl and other Christian authors are not focusing on just the emotions evoked by thriller type books, but on the hope God can offer even within the context of extreme tragedy. Isn't that what we are all called to do, to give a reason for our hope? In this book Mehl focuses on personal responsibility. We are personally responsible for our own choices, not the choices of others, and for seeing to the health of our relationship with God in order that we may give the reason for our hope, and share the love, grace, and mercy or our heavenly Father. The author works through some intense suspense, carefully placed information, tension between characters, and deep emotions to bring this theme to light. She does this very well. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Cold Pursuit from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Lock your door, grab your covers and get ready for an intense, action packed thriller where nothing is what it seems. The author begins a new series with two characters that capture your attention right away. River is still reeling from something that changed her life forever as she agrees to open a private investigation firm with her friend Tony. They both were there together the night that is detailed in the opening pages of this story. I was on the edge of my seat as these two suffered at the hands of a monster. It is unnerving what they went through but now they are determined to make a fresh start at their new partnership. River is someone who you may need to walk on egg shells around. She can be abrupt and rude at times but her heart is in the right place. I think I can say with confidence that she makes a great character because she still carries trauma from her past but tries to keep it buried. I expect any minute for her to explode and perhaps it may allow her to finally let go of the past. Sometimes we go to a dark place before we finally cry out to God. River has struggled with her lack of faith for a long time. I love when Tony tells her, “ God will lead you out.” Tony is someone you definitely want as a friend. He is compassionate, determined and protective. I love how he watches out for River and is attentive to her mood swings. The case they are working on is bringing up sone bad memories and Tony is there to not only protect River but to put whoever is targeting them away. I like how the author weaves a story that keeps you guessing while witnessing the strong faith thread throughout the book. I appreciate how the author gives us a glimpse into what a mentally challenged person deals with. I almost feel sorry for the person in the story because he couldn’t understand that he needed help. All the years he had been bullied really affected him and caused him to not trust anyone. With medication he could have a better life but he chooses to ignore everyone and the consequences are deadly. I love how the author leaves the door open for the next book in this series. I am anxiously waiting to see what happened next in this thriller that takes you deep inside the world of mental illness where danger lurks if help is not received. I received a copy of this book from the author and also purchased a copy as well. The review is my own opinion.

With edgy and fast-paced suspense, this book had me hooked from beginning to end. The author includes a compassionate and sensitive exploration of mental issues that was informative as well as thoroughly researched. I enjoyed the sharp writing in the plot and the rich story of two former FBI agents who start their own detective agency. River Ryland has PTSD due to her near-death experience with a serial killer. Her partner Tony St. Clair suffers from memory loss from the same encounter with a man who personifies evil. The book is addictive and action-packed as River and Ryland throw themselves into a case looking for a young teen who disappeared after a concert. There are a lot of twists and some brilliantly written red herrings in this intricately woven plot. As River and Ryland search for Chris, they are also evading a serial killer who is targeting them and the danger seems so realistic that it is terrifying at times. I thoroughly enjoyed the tight plot that crackled with tension and the insightful look at synesthesia and aphasia. The novel is also infused with faith and is a clean read that is thought-provoking and fascinating. Since this is the first book in a new series featuring River and Tony, I am really looking forward to the other ones already! This riveting page-turner has me ready for more of this dynamic duo! Intense. Mesmerizing. Captivating and intriguing—describes this unputdownable suspense by masterful author, Nancy Mehl! This chilling, fascinating story digs down deep into the complex mind of a murderer...why he kills and who—and the masterminds who piece it all together. I especially enjoyed the rapport between best friends and private investigators, River Ryland and Tony St. Clair. Their humorous banter, mutual respect, compassion, and harmonious professionalism was beyond refreshing. However, I hope their friendship morphs into something more throughout the series. So far though, just friend zone. I found this thrilling book nothing short of brilliant. Proficiently written with never-ending excitement, twists and turns, and a redemptive, faith thread throughout...be sure to put Cold Pursuit at the top of your wishlist! "If God could love her through her anger and rejection of Him, she knew He would never abandon her. She felt safe in God's love." *I was given a complimentary ARC of this book by the publisher and was under no obligation to write a favorable review.*

People make bad choices. Unfortunately good people are often the recipients of these poor decisions. River Ryland and her partner Tony St. Clair, both FBI behavioral analysts, had the dubious privilege of barely surviving a serial killer. After recuperating, starting Watson Investigations has taken them away from the FBI to strike out on their own. Their very first case is a cold one - a young man has been missing for 4 years and his mother wants answers. Will they have success and give her the closure she needs? There is plenty of excitement, action and even murder as they get closer to what really happened. Through all of this, will River finally believe that God loves her, cares and has always been there for her? Leaving us with a cliffhanger, you can be sure we will be waiting for #2! An early copy of Ryland & St. Clair #1 was received through Bethany House Publishers and Baker Publishing Group.
