Our Orange and Black Poison Dart Frog This poison dart frog is 3 inches long from the extension of the front foot to the extension of the back foot. It is made of hard plastic and is sturdy, durable and the legs bend slightly. This fine colorful example is a reasonably accurate representation of this highly poisonous diurnal amphibian of South and Central American rainforests, although the true frog from the family Dentrobatoidea is usually no more than 2 1/4 inches long when its legs are extended. The Poison Dart Frog derives its name from the fact that native people, especially from Colombia, would dip the tips of their blow darts in the frog's secretions to create a lethal punishment against foes. Of the 175 species of poisonous dart frogs, only four have been used for that purpose. For the most part the poison dart frog is a carnivorous creature feasting on tiny insects. This genus of Poison Dart Frog is prevalent in South American rainforests and swamps, but this blue one is most common in Guyana and Northern Brazil. These frogs are great parents and carry tadpoles on their backs to safe watering spots in trees, pockets of water or or into bromeliads. It takes six weeks for the tadpole to develop into an adult. Although not classified as endangered, poison dart frog habitat is subject to degradation due to logging and agriculture. Also up until recently, these frogs were captured as a part of the exotic pet trade and during transport many died.
