Wading birds use their feet as tools to churn up the mud under water to bring food to the surface. The webbed feet of the large wading birds also help them keep from sinking into the mud. Water birds like herons often have other adaptations for the aquatic life, including beaks that help them feed in water and the ability to dive. Oily feathers help them shed water. Here are a few images of great blue herons taken along the Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon. These photos were taken on a cold day, and the heron has puffed up its feathers, creating air pockets that hold body heat and help keep the bird warm. Herons like to perch where they can see everything that goes on around them. It's pretty hard to surprise a heron! The heron's long neck is amazingly flexible.
