It is also the largest of the four (or five) species of tapirs and is anywhere from just under six feet to nearly 8 feet in length. They usually weigh between 550 and 710 pounds with females being bigger than males. That pattern is hard to detect especially when they lie down to sleep. The front feet have four toes while the back feet have three toes each. Most active around dusk and dawn they prefer to live near water sources and eat the shoots and leaves of more than 115 species of plants.
