About the Book

"In Detox Your Thoughts, popular psychologist Andrea Bonior, PhD, identifies the 12 most prevalent thought patterns that make people feel anxious, insecure, and generally just bad"--

Book Synopsis

Ditch the 10 mental traps that are making you feel anxious and insecure!

Toxic thought patterns zap your energy, kill your motivation, and upset your calm. The good news is that you can change not just the way you think, but the way your brain is wired. In Detox Your Thoughts, clinical psychologist Andrea Bonior uses techniques from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness to teach you to understand your thoughts--and your body--in a completely different way. For each of the 10 mental traps, Bonior uses the latest research in psychology and neuroscience to help you disempower and conquer self-sabotaging thoughts and offers a new habit to practice with specific and actionable steps. Negative thoughts will never go away completely, but with this book, you will learn how to eclipse them, improve your mental and emotional health, and change your life.

The perfect book for:

- Inspiration, self-help, motivation, and happiness seekers

With wit and research to back it up, Dr. Bonior presents a thorough guide to helping us shed the negative thought spirals that keep us stuck in our heads and out of our present lives. Detox Your Thoughts is easy to read and inspires that change is possible. Dr. Bonior uses metaphors, case examples, and provides practice exercises, all of which make absorbing the material user friendly and enjoyable. The book is organized so you can flip to exactly how your thoughts impact you in a negative way—sections include: how your thoughts impact how you think about yourself, how your thoughts impact your in the moment experiences, how your thoughts impact your deeper emotions, and how your thoughts impact the way you perceive your future and what you want out of life. You can flip to what is most relevant to you or you can go through each of these sections. I found them all helpful and they do tend to build on one another. Dr. Bonior teaches in a step by step manner how to change our negative thinking patterns but also provides charts with concrete examples of new thoughts to insert into your experiences. Overall Detox your thoughts is a valuable resource with researched based techniques that allow us to retrain our brains toward a more present and fulfilling life.

As a therapist of over 20 years, I am thrilled to have this book in my toolbox. It’s based on science but is in no way technical or dry. Quite the opposite - it’s conversational and funny. Most important, it includes strategies that work. Too many self help books say you have to change your thinking before you can start to make real change in your life. This is false. We don’t have direct control of our thoughts or feelings. In fact, for many of us, it’s the opposite - thoughts and feelings control US! We get stuck in our heads and thus stuck in our lives. Just knowing this is not enough, however, and what Bonior does is teach her reader HOW to get out from under the control of thoughts and feelings. This is exactly what I do as a therapist and its not easy to learn, let alone teach. Bonior breaks it down in such an easy and appealing way. She includes tons of exercises for practicing flexible, mindful awareness of thoughts, feelings, etc. She also explains why we get stuck in the first place and reminds us that we are not broken — everyone struggles sooner or later in their lives. I think my favorite thing about the book is the emphasis on values. Part 3, sweetly entitled “Your Heart,” is all about connecting with meaning and purpose. Practicing new skills and making change is hard - and we need to connect those efforts to the things that matter to us. Best part is that we can connect to what matters today, which means we can get to the business of living meaningful lives right now.

As someone who reads at night when I’m already tired, I was glad this book was easy to read and understand. I learned tools to calm my frazzled brain and reframe some of my worries and negative thoughts. I’m even teaching some of the techniques to my teenager. I foresee coming back to this book over and over again.
