[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was bought for our soon-to-be 3yr old grandson. Only after it came did I realize I needed the pen. The items have been enjoyed by our grandson and he may settle down and try to learn the sounds. He liked using the pen. There could have been more instructions and tips on using the cards.

Fun way for kids to learn beginning phonics!

We love hot dots sets because it is a fun and interactive way for kids to learn! I have been trying to find ways to keep teaching my 5 year old in order to prepare her for kindergarten in the fall. She is interested in learning how to read but she doesn't like doing regular flash cards. This hot dots set is the perfect way for her to learn beginning phonics like letter sounds and rhyming words. The ace pen (which is not included in this set but we had some pens from other hot dots sets we have) provides instant feedback in a fun way. The set includes 36 double sided cards so there is a total of 72 activities. My daughter enjoyed doing this set so I am so happy that she is learning beginning phonics in this fun way! Highly recommend!
Pen doesn't work. All answers are "incorrect"

Worked for a little bit. Now we're using it for our 2nd child and the pen gives "incorrect" for every choice. Tried cleaning the pen tip, changing batteries, tapping on every part of the circles... Nothing.

To be a fully autonomous product for pre-readers, there should be a black dot next to the instructions on each card. This way the child can hear what is expected of them rather than having an adult have to be nearby at all times to instruct. Was disappointed when I discovered this. If this change was made this would be a really phenomenal product. This critique goes for all of the cards/books that are designed for pre-readers.

Bought this for my daughter for the summer holidays before she started school. What a great resource. We can do it together or she's getting confident to do them by herself. She uses the cards with the kitty pen, who kindly tells her she is wrong so she's not put off to try again. Cards got a little bent when my niece got hold of them, but still work fine and were easily flattened!

*I received this product in exchange for my honest review. My four year old son loves having his own hot dots set, just like his big brothers. We use our "dog pen" with these cards and it works well. My son is motivated to review the cards since he considers the pen cool. I love that it's educational and that he can review on his own. My only complaint is that if the pen is not directly on top of the dot, it can give the incorrect answer. Sometimes it helps to wipe the tip of the pen with a tissue.

My students enjoy practicing the letter sound skills using the the Hot Dots Jr. and "Ace" the puppy pen set. I appreciate the fact beginning and ending sounds are included in the practiced skills. As a classroom teacher I also appreciate the sound options when using "Ace" the puppy pen. Thank You!
