Description
About the Book
A comprehensive guide to the mammals of South-east Asia.Book Synopsis
This book is a fully revised and updated second edition of the only comprehensive guide to the mammals of South-east Asia, one of the world's richest regions in terms of mammal diversity, where species new to science are still being described regularly, though there is increasing pressure on all of its wild mammal populations.
From large mammals such as the elephant, big cats, dolphins and whales through bears, monkeys and badgers to bats, civets, rats and shrews, more than 550 species are described in detail, including key identification characteristics, habitat, behavior, distribution and status, accompanied by line drawings of footprints and details of anatomy, or other aspects of identification. Beautiful color plates depict nearly all species and their variations, while accompanying range maps provide up-to-date information on distribution. This field guide is essential for any naturalist or traveler visiting this special corner of Asia.Review Quotes
"Francis's work is a monumental step in raising awareness of these secretive creatures. The book will definitely come with me on my next trip to Southeast Asia." --Quarterly Review of Biology
"The 30 years Charles Francis spent in the field in Southeast Asia are evidenced by the complete and thoughtful nature of this guide ... This book has already proven very useful in my research and I anticipate relying on it for many years to come. Without it, sources of information would be scattered widely and difficult to find." --Journal of Mammalogy "Both field guide and handbook, this is an important reference for professionals and a very intriguing book for anyone interested in wildlife." --Wildlife ActivistAbout the Author
