Celebrating Our Roots from Lola's Lap to her First Apo

As a first-time Lola (grandmother) who was born in the Philippines but grew up in the US, and now reading this to my infant apo (grandchild), Filipino Friends feels like a gentle bridge between generations. It follows Sam, a Filipino-American boy visiting the Philippines, introducing little ones to our vibrant traditions—fiestas, family gatherings, games, and food—through colorful illustrations and simple Tagalog words. I only wish the book had a pronunciation guide for the Tagalog words which could aid learners. Why I love it: • It celebrates heritage in a joyful, relatable way. • The bilingual labels make language learning natural. • The art is rich and inviting, perfect for curious eyes. Best for: Ages 4–8, but even babies can enjoy the pictures while we share stories behind them. Themes: Family, friendship, cultural pride, and belonging. In one line: A heartfelt picture book that connects young readers to Filipino culture through warmth, language, and tradition.
