This story of a boy who grows to manhood, and of a tree that gives him her bounty through the years, is a moving parable about the gift of giving and the capacity to love.

Book Synopsis

The Giving Tree, a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein, has been a classic favorite for generations.

Since it was first published fifty years ago, Shel Silverstein's poignant picture book for readers of all ages has offered a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit.

And don't miss Runny Babbit Returns, the new book from Shel Silverstein!

From the Back Cover

Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy. So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

My first grader seemed to like this book a lot, especially the drawings. But fair warning, the storyline is a bit of a tear jerker if you’re a parent and your brain interpreted the story the way mine did.

The back cover is plain scary. I have contemplated returning the book because of the huge photo on the back cover of the author. Why would they print it that way?!

Book itself is good but someone ripped off a previous shipping label on the cover and just left it like that.

Touching and intersting relationship

It’s grateful for someone who read this book and think about their parents, but it’s an interesting angle for someone who read this book and only think how their kids should think about them. Love is not unconditional, it never is and never will. It’s perfectly normal. Just express what you want and hold up to your boundaries as well.

One of the best classics ever. We had to cut down the tree in our yard my kids grew up with. So i cut slabs out of a big branch and made them Clocks and gave this book with it. This book is such a good story
