- “This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through.” —Reese Witherspoon
- Evie Porter has everything a nice, Southern girl could want: a perfect, doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence and a garden, a fancy group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.
Description
The identity comes first: Evie Porter. Once she’s given a name and location by her mysterious boss Mr. Smith, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it. Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job.
Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job will be different. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes--especially after what happened last time.
Because the one thing she’s worked her entire life to keep clean, the one identity she could always go back to—her real identity—just walked right into this town. Evie Porter must stay one step ahead of her past while making sure there’s still a future in front of her. The stakes couldn't be higher--but then, Evie has always liked a challenge...

A unique and intriguing spy thriller
4.5 stars: First Lie Wins hooked me from the beginning. The protagonist isn’t who she seems and the story slowly reveals more about her and her mysterious boss throughout the book. This was a nice alternative to the unreliable narrator trope that’s popular in thrillers, but hard to perfect. Her thought process made sense, she wasn’t hiding things from the reader, we learned what she learned in real time with few exceptions. Flashbacks revealed things she already knew, which spared the reader a hefty exposition dump at the end (here’s looking at you Never Lie). It also made the twist something you could guess, but left enough mystery that you kind of suspected everyone. This read like a spy action movie, which isn’t usually my thing. However, I really enjoyed it and recommend it to other thriller fans.

Stick with it
I was half way through the book when it finally started to catch my attention. I did not see the ending coming and now all the going back and forth makes sense. It’s worth sticking with it

Boring
I had high hopes for this book. Every time I'd think it was going to pick up, it fell flat. It was all over the place.

Hid from husband & kids just to keep reading!
Best book I have read in a while. Some parts are hard to get through bc it does jump around a timeline. If you are able to read in a quiet place and keep up, it is actually a VERY well written book. The main character may seem to be confused but just read it all the way through and you will see she is the real mastermind. Great read! Can't stop thinking about it and am desperately hoping for a sequel. Trying to find a similar book now seems impossible.

Horrible
I honestly don’t know why this book has such great reviews. I am normally a quick reader and can finish a good book in a day, two max. It took me 3 days to get to the half way point (only like 335 or so pages total). I skipped from the middle of the book to the last few chapters just to read the ending. I’ve read over 15 books in two months this summer, and it’s rated last for me in my opinion.

Goood book
I bought this book for my secret sister. I ended up buying this for myself too. I can’t wait to reveal myself to my secret sister so that we can share our thoughts about the book. I look for the Reese Witherspoon picks.

Wow!
Twists and turns! Many books I read involve plots anyone could think up, but this book... I would have NEVER thought of this plot! I read this book so fast! I was totally emersed in Evie's life the entire time I was reading. I thought I had things figured out by page 190, but I was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong! I soared through the rest of the book just loving every minute! Read this book!
