What happened??
This has been our go-to litter for the past several years. As others have said here,something with the formula HAS changed. The perfume smell makes us sneeze, gives me headaches, causes flare ups of my chronic lung issues, AND makes my cats fur and feet smell 24/7. Their eyes have been goopy too. I wrote the company an email about 3 weeks ago. No response! As others here have said, the litter granules are smaller,darker, bustier and highly perfumed. I am going to have to look for another brand. My cats any my health are being compromised. Very disappointing. Also very frustrating that no one has replied to my email and that you say there have been no formula changes. That just can't be true. These reviews show otherwise.

No longer any good
Have used this litter for years and it was the best. Within this past year, something has changed other than the color being darker. The granules are finer, it leaves dust EVERYWHERE and it has a light scent.

Why did you ruin a great litter?!
This used to be great litter; almost no dust and UNSCENTED, which is important for my cat with asthma. However, something changed mid-2025. It is now horribly dust (clouds of dust when you pour it out) and an overwhelming perfume smell. Why did you change it?! Also, it now forms a thick sludge and doesn’t clump well. I started noticing my wire scoop gets wet litter caked on it when I scoop. It never used to do this. Please bring back the old formulation!!

What happened to this litter?
We’ve been using this for years, but whatever has changed in the formula recently has made it terrible. No clumping, no odor control and it leaves sludge in the box. I have one bag left and will be finding another litter.

Terrible product that I will avoid in the future.
I am extremely disappointed with this product! It is definitely NOT unscented, the chemical lemony stench is so powerful it lingers on my clothes for hours after cleaning a litter box! It is very dusty, it does not clump, it makes my cats sneeze, and makes me feel ill to use and deal with it!

Simply Unscented is no longer Unscented.
I recently purchased a new 6-pack of the Simply Unscented litter and was so disappointed in the changes that have been made. Simply Unscented is no longer unscented, and this is a deal breaker for our household as my husband is highly allergic. The chemical smell is overwhelming, the litter grains are smaller and don’t clump like it used to, and it’s dusty and makes us sneeze. I’m so unhappy about this! I’m going to have to suffer through the remaining bags while I look for another option. I hope you go back to the old formula - and quickly!!!

New formula is terrible!
The formula has changed, it is terrible now! Dusty and no longer clumps. I have four 10-year old cats and used this litter for years, was very impressed and happy with the quality, no longer. I will be changing my auto-delivery to a litter that actually works and doesn’t require a shower after cleaning the boxes. The dust is absolutely horrible.

Upsetting
Used this frequently but something changed … it’s sooooo dusty . It used to never be that dusty . There was a cloud of dust after I poured it and my cat rolled in it and is COVERED in dust..

Beware. Do not buy unless you want paste
If I could give 0 I would. My cat has a chronic respiratory thing and he’s been getting worse. The formula changed and it’s extremely dusty and no longer clumps but makes a sludgey pastey type pile of urine. I wish I found out sooner because I get it on auto ship through a company and first started using the new formula. I’ve been a customer probably for a decade. I will be searching for a new litter.

Smells awful, NOT UNSCENTED.
I’m so confused. I bought this because it says unscented and it’s the strongest smelling litter I’ve ever used. So artificially fragranced. And very dusty.

Not the Fresh Step unscented I used before!
I just got a new kitten and am very disappointed in the new formulation of Fresh Step Simply Unscented. It has a terrible perfume/chemical scent and has poor clumping (endless little pieces I’m having to fish out of the litter box). And not to mention the litter is tracked from the bathroom into my bed! If that wasn’t bad enough, I just figured out the second time washing sheets since using this product, apparently a few pieces of litter on the sheets left little black smudges on the sheets (assume this is from the carbon in the litter).

Massive Dust Cloud
Miss the old formula. I feel like I need to wear a mask when I dump this litter into the box as it now creates a massive dust cloud! Far from dust free. We have a cat with asthma, so I will probably need to change. The litter is also much darker and the texture is different. Very small particles that track everywhere. Fresh step DONT FIX SOMETHING THAT ISNT BROKEN!

What Happened to the Old Formula?
I’ve used Fresh Step for years, but the recent formula change is a dealbreaker. The litter is now darker, way dustier, and my cats track it all over the house. Clumps fall apart more easily, and the whole room smells like dust. Whatever “improvements” were made, they’ve made it worse in every way. Really disappointed — time to find a new brand.

It's Sad Formula has Changed - Dusty & Mushy Clump
Fresh Step Simply Unscented was my favorite litter til my last purchase I noticed immediately that the litter was a darker color and had a different consistency. Also, the new formula litter created a lot of dust. But the BIGGEST issue is that the litter no longer produces hard clumps. It's soft mushy clumps that don't work well in a litter robot or a regular box. Hope they change the formula back.

Fraudulent product
False advertisement. The unscented 4 pack is NOT the same product. The bags even have fake cat logo on it and it doesn’t state Fresh Step!!!! Why did it change and why are you selling as the same product as before??!

NO LONGER FRAGRANCE FREE!!
This used to be May favorite litter… Every box I’ve purchased over the past two months has been heavily fragranced and extremely dusty. What happened? Misleading people and selling a product that is supposed to be completely fragrance free yet is full of artificial fragrance is shady business practice. We’re buying “fragrance free” for a reason. Everything my cats come in contact with smells like cleaning chemicals, it’s disgusting. The dust is making all of us sneeze as well.

NOT DUST FREE
I’ve been buying this cat litter for years and especially loved the dust free, but know it’s definitely NOT dust free!! It’s terrible!! Can’t even scoop without creating dust!!! May have to change the litter!!

Bring the original formula and quality back!!!!!!
Have been using this litter for 8 years in favor of the low dust and unscented features. BUT the recent bags are soooo unbearably dusty and in darker color. Why changed the formula and lower the quality?
