Q: I've only bought potato starters, and planted in-ground. So, I just want to clarify-Does this come with potato starters, or is it just a bag? If so, can't you use any canvas bag?
submitted by 30YrCX - 6 months ago
A: This item does not come with potato starters, it is just the bag. The patented fabric air-prunes roots for stronger, healthier plants. It also aerates soil, prevents heat build-up and allows excess water to drain away.

We have a number of these bags. We are on the fourth year using them. Last much longer than the flimsy ones we bought from another source.
I have bought this bag 4 times!

When I decide to try growing potatoes, I knew I couldn't grow them in my horrible city backyard soil. Unfortunately, the fabric bags I own were not strong enough and my containers would be too heavy and awkward. I tried these potato bags and I am so happy that I did. Currently I have 2 bags growing potatoes, 1 growing sunchokes, and 1 growing tomatoes. I know these are titled "Potato Bags", but they are so strong and have been great at keeping my potatoes happy that I thought I would try tomatoes. So far my tomatoes are very happy. I also love the color (I purchased the periwinkle). They are sturdy enough to stand on their own and keep their shape while allowing drainage and airflow. Love them!
I liked mine I bought two years ago

First year grew peppers in the bag, last season I tried spuds. I was shocked by the yield. The Russets were great.

Growing in Florida with sandy soils means raised bed or container gardening. These big bags provide depth for large for rooted plants.

I ordered this to transplant a surprisingly healthy off-the-cuff ube potato plant. The one-gallon bag I ordered from another major retailer wasn't big enough, and I was trying to move away from them for the next purchase. This came as a great surprise - the fabric feels heavy-duty, the stitching feels solid, and it stands up without having anything in it, making it easy to fill and work with. So far, so good!
Beautiful, strong grow bag!

I ordered one tomato bag and one potato bag. I received 2 potato bags and no tomato bag. So I can't comment on how good the tomato bag might be but I have used the potato bags for tomatoes and the plants are doing okay so far.

Who knew growing potatoes could be attractive. With extremely limited space (third floor apartment balcony) this grow bag is perfect. Easy to use. Adding the lightweight soil as the plants grow is great for an older gardener. No hauling heavy pots around or up stairs. The bag is still moveable when full. The color adds to the garden palette. My grandkids are fascinated by it!
Very convenient for potato

I have been using one of these for growing potato for three years and decided to get another. The older one is getting a little flimsy and needs a stake to hold up one side. The new ones seems a little more robust and have handles to transport it.
Impractical

Nothing tells you how much garden soil it holds so if you're going to shop for some Miracle Grow or the like to fill it you have to guess at how much to buy. Mine's about 2/3 full as I didn't buy enough but at that level it's hardly "portable" - it's far too heavy to move. The outside is already molding so it'll go in the garbage after I harvest my peppers.
Good product...would be great with corner supports

I am trying these bags for my half high blueberry plants. The plants need protection in the winter from deer and rabbits and these bags will help me move them to a "protected" area. Your helpful garden experts did remind me that container plants are not as hardy as when planted in the ground so a sheltered winter site will be chosen. The bags will also allow me to control the pH of the soil easier - keeping it very acidic. The bags are heavy, but I have found that they easily fit on my hand truck for moving.

After the drought this summer, and a disaster of a garden, I saved as much as possible in large pots & buckets. I like that I can control watering, that it is portable if necessary & winter storage will be easy. Am thinking of what else I can put in it & how many more will be needed. Those who have seen it are interested.

I like that it is easily portable, especially if it is windy. I can move it to a protected spot. I used mine for blueberries, so we'll see how they hold through the winter.
