Faster than my 830

I bought this recently to replace a lost 830. Although it is faster (processing) I don't like it as much. Had a few glitches with it - get prompts that don't allow you to complete what you were doing and at least once, I ended up in a loop that took dozens of tried to get past and shut down the device to start over. I hope I get used to it and come to like it as much as mt 830.
Solar benefit doesn’t outweigh darker screen

I have had previous Edge models run out of juice on Century rides so solar seemed attractive, but I ride early morning/late afternoon a lot more than all day long and in fading light the screen is too dark. Lots of added features, but none that add huge value

I have been using the Garmin 840 for the past year and a half. I could say there are some good features in this bicycle computer. However, the screen is always hard to read. It's always kind of dark. It is not very clear. That is my only problem with this bicycle computer. One of the things is that if I make it where it's really bright, the battery does not last as much as advertised.

Have been using my 840 for many rides. Past few months the gradient display has stopped working. Uphills with negative gradients, downhills otherwise but not all the time. Cannot find a fix.

Overall a great computer but still glitchy. Grade and elevation are definitely Off. Sensor glitch, I had to do a hard reset and reconnect all the sensors.

I've used a garmin 820 for several years now and have been happy with it. But decided it was time to upgrade so after reading many reviews I went with the 840 solar. My rides are never too long but I thought the solar part would be a good back up in case I was out longer than usual. No issues so far and I'm happy with the purchase! Many thanks Garmin

840 solar is a game changer and in a smaller size computer compared to the 1030 or 40 etc. Love it. Does everything I need and more. Super simple set up from my Garmin profile. Just copied everything from my 530. Simple!

My Garmin 840 experienced persistent issues from the beginning, frequently freezing during use. On multiple occasions, I was forced to restart the ride on the device. Notably, these problems only occurred when using the navigation feature—which is essential for my bikepacking plans this summer, as reliable navigation is the primary reason I purchased a bicycle computer.
Awkward menu layout and altimeter doesn’t work

Overall, this is a good unit. I like the amount of features that it has in the battery life. But I don’t like, is the clumsy/awkward menu layout that takes time to find things. I’ve had this edge 840 for about a month now, and still have trouble navigating certain areas. Today try to do a benefit charity ride in the rain and the altimeter stopped working a few miles in. Not the end of the world as the navigation still worked. But this seems like an issue that should have been fixed in the last version and it’s kind of frustrating when you are trying track stats and plan efforts on climbs. Wish I had known about the altimeter issue before I purchased.
The device crashes

When using the map the device crashes, it shuts down and after a while it turns back on. It's very frustrating as this happens almost every time you try to look at the streets around you, making it impossibile to find your curse if you get lost because the device keeps shutting down

This is an upgrade for me from an older edge and it is amazing. My older Garmin was great when I first got it but after many years it started lagging behind technology. This device has all the whistles and with the solar option it really extends my ride time for ultra long rides. Highly recommend for anyone who needs reliability or all the techie stuff.

This was a gift and I am just getting started learning the features. So far it has been pretty easy to load a route and save the ride. I need to make the font a little larger or at least define the contrast better. Let me know if that is possible

Decent bike computer but screen too dim

Overall this is a good device with lots of features, but the screen is very dim and difficult to read in either the dark or direct sunlight. The solar charging doesn’t offer much benefit either and the battery drains pretty fast.
I’m keeping it, almost perfect

*photo is of the the larger 1040 (or whatever #it is garmin, it was unnecessary for me and i prefer the 840). Plan ahead for time to sit down with necessary charging, WiFi, and account login information to setup the device. Once setup - it’s awesome. It lasted 6 days (lots of desert sun exposure) on the solar charging, had at least 6-10 different routes loaded, sharing information/updates/notifications, checking the screens/switching between screens for various metrics during long bike rides…idk how much more I could have been using unnecessary screen time with it, but it never died (#teamamerica). Also it does passively charge in the sun when it’s not in use! I’m keeping mine. Even though I wish it had more options/range for articulating how it sits on my drop bars. It’s not enough to negate the other advantages of it.
