Q: Will my iPhone work to control the temperature?

submitted by Sharon - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi, Sharon! Absolutely! The Nest Thermostat uses the Google Home app that you can download on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 14.0 or later. You can also use a mobile phone or tablet with Android 8.0 or later. Visit the Google Nest Help page for more information.

Q: work with baseboard heaters?

submitted by Bill - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi there, Bill. Thanks for your inquiry. Electric baseboard heating systems are generally not compatible with Nest Learning Thermostat. They are only compatible if the electric baseboard is controlled by a 24 V thermostat. To ensure the full compatibility of your HVAC system, we recommend checking the wire labels on your system first. You can use our Compatibility Checker tool and verify full compatibility, here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246656

Q: Is this Nest model compatible/recommended for a two-stage furnace?

submitted by Bill - 1 year ago
  • A: Hello, Bill. We appreciate your inquiry. Most 24 V heating and cooling systems are compatible with Nest thermostats, Including 2-stage furnaces. However, there are some systems that aren’t compatible. Nest thermostats are designed to use very little power, and in many cases they can use your system’s heating wires to get enough consistent power. And though Nest thermostats would generally work without a common (C) wire, there are some systems that would require a C wire on the new Nest Thermostat like a heat only or cool only system. You may visit the Online Compatibility Checker at the Google Nest Help center for more details.

Q: This Thermostat Need C Wire?

submitted by Luis - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi there Luis! It really depends. Nest Thermostats are designed to take very little power from your heating and cooling system (or HVAC system). However, there are cases where your system´s wires can't deliver enough power to support the Nest thermostat's features, then they start draining the batteries and disconnect you from your Wifi network. In such a situation, installing a common (C) wire between your HVAC system and Nest thermostats can help deliver enough power and resolve the problem. If you still have some questions and would like to speak to any of our support specialists, we'd be happy to answer them. Please consider contacting our support team via the Google Nest help page.

  • A: In most homes, installing a Nest Thermostat is an easy DIY project that takes about 20-30 min. You can find the installation guide on our support page. However, we recommend checking the compatibility of your system with Nest Thermostat by using the Compatibility Checker tool on the same support page.

Heat wave - 7 months ago, Verified purchaser
The unit worked great for about 3 months until it started to automatically shut off the fan when the AC was running. This put extra pressure on the HVAC motor and eventually killed it. The HVAC was only 3 years old so the repair guy was pretty confused why it was failing - and then figured out it was the thermostat not letting the fan run. Cost me over $400 to replace the motor in labor (luckily the motor was covered). Google refused to pay for any of this. They offered to replace the thermostat, but would only ship it ground - about 4 days to arrive, and in the middle of a heat wave. Not a good experience.

Continually Disconnecting

Victoria - 1 year ago
The nest thermostats are the most frustrating products I have ever encountered. If the wifi goes out for even a second the device disconnects. As the internet is still working, the device acknowledges that it is connected to the wifi but remains "offline" in the app until being manually restarted. Truly terrible design. Why would it not have been designed to automatically attempt reconnecting? It's insane that you expect people to have to manually restart it anytime there is a blip in the wifi. The nest doorbell is able to handle that just fine but the thermostats are a constant problem.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 1 year ago
Hi Victoria, thanks for giving us time to share your feedback on the Nest Thermostat, and we’re sorry to hear it’s a frustrating experience for you. If you find yourself in need to reconnect your thermostat to your Wi-Fi again, please see the steps below that might help: Please note that you’ll need access to your Nest Thermostat to update the network and password. You can’t update Wi-Fi information with the app: - Open the Google Home app . - Touch and hold your thermostat's tile. - Tap Settings > Remove device. - On your thermostat, go to Settings > Account > Disconnect. - In the Home app , tap the Home icon at the top left of the home screen. - Tap Set up device > New device. - Choose a home > Select Thermostat (It may specify which thermostat, select Nest Thermostat). - Scan the QR code on the back of the thermostat display. - When you reach the “Installing your thermostat” screen, tap ""Already installed”. - You can then skip most of the usual setup steps until you reach the Wi-Fi setup step. When you get to the Wi-Fi setup step, enter the new password and network name. If your network name doesn’t appear in the list of Wi-Fi networks, wait a few minutes while the app scans for networks. If your thermostat still can’t find your new network, refer to the Google Nest Help Center for more help: Change Nest thermostat Wi-Fi network We’ll share your feedback with the right team for future improvements. And if you come across any concerns with using the thermostat effectively, simply let us know by visiting us at the Google Nest Help page and we’d be happy to help.

Does not work with Carrier furnaces although most other universal thermostats is. The worst part is the hoops you have to jump through to find out. You’d think Google of all companies would have a simple tool where you could type is your furnace make/model to see if it’s compatible. Instead, you have to send a photo of your current thermostat setup and spend nearly an hour online with a chat agent.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 1 year ago
Hi Gingerbeard412, thanks for posting your review. We're sorry to hear that your experience with Nest Thermostat didn't meet your expectations when it comes to checking the compatibility of the device with your furnace or HVAC system. Your feedback on your chat experience is appreciated and will be relayed to the right team for improvements we may provide in the future. If you're willing to give your Nest Thermostat another go, we recommend checking your system's compatibility by visiting our Google Help site and search for ‘Nest Thermostat compatibility’ to open the compatibility checker.

Common Issue of breaking after a few months

QuinnsMama - 1 year ago, Verified purchaser
It stopped working after 6 months. The AC repair guy said this is so common for them, the white ones do this very quickly and the more expensive silver and black models do this after 4-5 years. The issue is something to do with the battery. It was causing the fan to start up and turn off over and over. The return window has expired but I am very unhappy with this purchase, it was expensive for pasting such a short period of time and it’s clearly a known issue!
1 reply from Google Team team - 1 year ago

c locke - 2 years ago
we had a nest downstairs that constantly blew cold air in winter and required constant resetting (this was after working fine for two winters, so it wasn't a wiring problem). I decided it was a one-off and bought a nest-e for upstairs. now, after one summer of working well, it's begun to blow hot when it's supposed to blow cold. this is a frequent complaint online. it's a software issue, Google knows about it and they don't care. they won't replace your nest or provide any help. don't buy.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 2 years ago
Hi c locke, thanks for contacting our support team. It's unfortunate to hear that your Nest Thermostats haven't been working as expected. We understand how inconvenient, such situations can be, and we apologize If you're using a heat pump system, and it starts to blow cool air when your Nest thermostat is in Heat mode (or if it blows warm air when it's in Cool mode), you can change the settings for the orientation of your heat pump. Here are the steps you can follow to change the settings for your Nest Thermostat: - Open the Google Home app. - Tap your thermostat. - At the top right, tap Settings . - Select Thermostat. - Scroll until you find Heat pump. It should show which wire configuration is currently selected. - If the O option is highlighted, select B. - If the B option is highlighted, select O. - To make sure the issue is resolved, test your heating and cooling again. If changing your O/B wire settings didn’t resolve the issue, change the wire’s connector in the Nest thermostat: - Double check that you turned off the power to your heating and cooling system. - Remove the wire in the O/B connector. - Make sure that the wire doesn’t have any corrosion, that it’s straight, and that there's between ⅓ and ½ inch of exposed copper. If not, clip and strip the wire again. - Put the wire back into the O/B connector. Make sure the wire is fully inserted and that the O/B connector button stays down. - Put the thermostat display back on. - Turn your system’s power back on and test heating and cooling again. Refer to step 2 for next steps. Lastly, if the issue is still persistent, recommend contacting a Nest Pro technician to check your heat pump system. Alternatively, you may reach out to our support team for further guidance by visiting the Google Nest help page.

Don’t buy this nest! It’s awful. Locations services don’t work and is always on the away setting unless I constantly go in and mark myself as home. Often I’m waking up drenched in sweat in the summer or extremely cold in the winter because it defaults to “eco” mood. It’s no longer returnable so sadly I have to muster up the funds to purchase a different unit asap. Plus this one does not use the nest app, it uses the google home app and it not compatible with the multi room sensors.

Hello LovesTarget220, thanks for posting your review of your Nest Thermostat. We're sorry to learn that you're having some difficulties with controlling or changing the Eco Mode feature of the device. Also, please know that our priority with this launch was to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest products and to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. Just like everyone else says, it constantly disconnects from Google servers. If I didn’t care about using it from an app then I could have spent a fraction on a cheaper thermostat.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 2 years ago
Hi Derek, thanks for letting us know of your experience with using the Nest Thermostat, and we're sorry to hear that it constantly disconnects from Google servers. Nest thermostats connectivity issues could be related to power issues, which may occur when your system wires can't deliver enough power to keep the thermostats charged up. As a result, they start draining the batteries and disconnect from your Wi-Fi. And sometimes, poor Wi-Fi connectivity can also cause the battery to drain faster. Your Nest thermostat uses the voltage from your system’s wires to keep its internal battery charged. If the power to your system is switched off or there’s a blackout, the battery has enough capacity to keep working for a while but will eventually run out. Your thermostat will also turn off features like Wi-Fi to preserve battery life before it must turn off completely. We'd like an opportunity to investigate the reasons why your thermostat is behaving differently. Please communicate with us anytime and we'll figure out a way to provide a better experience for you, here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was hard to install as we have a newer furnace and air conditioner. But after our heating man installed (in a mere matter of minutes) I love it. The ability to change the temperature away from the actual unit, whether in another room or away makes it perfect. I love the ability to turn on the air or heat before I get home. Totally worth getting.
