Does not work with Carrier furnaces although most other universal thermostats is. The worst part is the hoops you have to jump through to find out. You’d think Google of all companies would have a simple tool where you could type is your furnace make/model to see if it’s compatible. Instead, you have to send a photo of your current thermostat setup and spend nearly an hour online with a chat agent.

I bought this last January so I can no longer return it and Google will not replace it. This will not turn on the heat even though according to the thermostat it’s currently heating the house. Constantly having to do factory resets to get it to work. Complete trash so not buy.

Common Issue of breaking after a few months

QuinnsMama - 2 months ago, Verified purchaser
It stopped working after 6 months. The AC repair guy said this is so common for them, the white ones do this very quickly and the more expensive silver and black models do this after 4-5 years. The issue is something to do with the battery. It was causing the fan to start up and turn off over and over. The return window has expired but I am very unhappy with this purchase, it was expensive for pasting such a short period of time and it’s clearly a known issue!

we had a nest downstairs that constantly blew cold air in winter and required constant resetting (this was after working fine for two winters, so it wasn't a wiring problem). I decided it was a one-off and bought a nest-e for upstairs. now, after one summer of working well, it's begun to blow hot when it's supposed to blow cold. this is a frequent complaint online. it's a software issue, Google knows about it and they don't care. they won't replace your nest or provide any help. don't buy.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 3 months ago
Hi c locke, thanks for contacting our support team. It's unfortunate to hear that your Nest Thermostats haven't been working as expected. We understand how inconvenient, such situations can be, and we apologize If you're using a heat pump system, and it starts to blow cool air when your Nest thermostat is in Heat mode (or if it blows warm air when it's in Cool mode), you can change the settings for the orientation of your heat pump. Here are the steps you can follow to change the settings for your Nest Thermostat: - Open the Google Home app. - Tap your thermostat. - At the top right, tap Settings . - Select Thermostat. - Scroll until you find Heat pump. It should show which wire configuration is currently selected. - If the O option is highlighted, select B. - If the B option is highlighted, select O. - To make sure the issue is resolved, test your heating and cooling again. If changing your O/B wire settings didn’t resolve the issue, change the wire’s connector in the Nest thermostat: - Double check that you turned off the power to your heating and cooling system. - Remove the wire in the O/B connector. - Make sure that the wire doesn’t have any corrosion, that it’s straight, and that there's between ⅓ and ½ inch of exposed copper. If not, clip and strip the wire again. - Put the wire back into the O/B connector. Make sure the wire is fully inserted and that the O/B connector button stays down. - Put the thermostat display back on. - Turn your system’s power back on and test heating and cooling again. Refer to step 2 for next steps. Lastly, if the issue is still persistent, recommend contacting a Nest Pro technician to check your heat pump system. Alternatively, you may reach out to our support team for further guidance by visiting the Google Nest help page.

Don’t buy this nest! It’s awful. Locations services don’t work and is always on the away setting unless I constantly go in and mark myself as home. Often I’m waking up drenched in sweat in the summer or extremely cold in the winter because it defaults to “eco” mood. It’s no longer returnable so sadly I have to muster up the funds to purchase a different unit asap. Plus this one does not use the nest app, it uses the google home app and it not compatible with the multi room sensors.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 5 months ago
Hello LovesTarget220, thanks for posting your review of your Nest Thermostat. We're sorry to learn that you're having some difficulties with controlling or changing the Eco Mode feature of the device. You can change Eco Temperature settings in the Home app to fit your temperature needs. Also, please know that our priority with this launch was to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest products and to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. We'd recommend that you reach out to our support team so we can further assist you with your Nest Thermostat. You can contact us by visiting our Google Help site online.

1 reply from Nest Support team - 7 months ago
Hi Jg08, thanks so much for sharing your review and we're sorry to hear that you're experiencing some difficulties with setting the schedule of your Nest Thermostat. If you've set your schedules already, the Nest Thermostat should follow what you set. We'd recommend that you check your Home & Away Routines since they can use presence sensing to determine when to start. It can adjust your Nest thermostats to the right temperatures when the last person leaves and the first person returns. If you need further assistance in checking your Home & Away Routines or have additional questions, you can contact us anytime by visiting our Google Help site.

Just like everyone else says, it constantly disconnects from Google servers. If I didn’t care about using it from an app then I could have spent a fraction on a cheaper thermostat.
1 reply from Nest Support team - 8 months ago
Hi Derek, thanks for letting us know of your experience with using the Nest Thermostat, and we're sorry to hear that it constantly disconnects from Google servers. Nest thermostats connectivity issues could be related to power issues, which may occur when your system wires can't deliver enough power to keep the thermostats charged up. As a result, they start draining the batteries and disconnect from your Wi-Fi. And sometimes, poor Wi-Fi connectivity can also cause the battery to drain faster. Your Nest thermostat uses the voltage from your system’s wires to keep its internal battery charged. If the power to your system is switched off or there’s a blackout, the battery has enough capacity to keep working for a while but will eventually run out. Your thermostat will also turn off features like Wi-Fi to preserve battery life before it must turn off completely. We'd like an opportunity to investigate the reasons why your thermostat is behaving differently. Please communicate with us anytime and we'll figure out a way to provide a better experience for you, here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was hard to install as we have a newer furnace and air conditioner. But after our heating man installed (in a mere matter of minutes) I love it. The ability to change the temperature away from the actual unit, whether in another room or away makes it perfect. I love the ability to turn on the air or heat before I get home. Totally worth getting.

I had purchased a thermostat before the nest. I was going to have to pull a C wire. I found the Nest and took the other thermostat back. The Nest needed no modification to my system. It was easy to install. The programming is fairly easy. I’m still learning and tweaking in order to get the most efficiency from my system. I love how it communicates with my google home devices. It also has a cool modern look.

Hi Chrisann lucciola, we're sorry to hear you encountered this power issue with Nest Thermostat, and we'd like you to know that we're here to help. The battery drain and Wi-Fi connectivity issues suggest that Nest Thermostat isn't getting enough power. Nest Thermostats get power from the wires of your heating and cooling system. There are cases where these wires can't deliver enough power to support the Nest Thermostat's features, as a result, they start draining the batteries and may even disconnect from your Wi-Fi network. In such cases, installing a common(C) wire between your HVAC and Nest thermostats can resolve the battery drain problem. You may contact a Nest Pro technician for assistance with checking your system and installing a common (C) wire if needed. If you need further help and guidance, please feel free to contact our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp
