Hans-Hendrik Grimmling (*1947 in Zwenkau bei Leipzig) ist einer der wichtigsten Maler seiner Generation in Deutschland und war Mitinitiator des legendären 1. Leipziger Herbstsalons 1984, einer Ausstellung, die als Meilenstein der unangepassten DDR-Kunst gilt. Seit mehr als 40 Jahren bewegt sich seine Malerei an den Rändern der Abstraktion. Ihn beschäftigt die Erfahrung des Loslassens, des Lösens von der Figur, vom Narrativ, von der ostdeutschen Identität, das Ausbrechen aus den vorbestimmten Formen des Körperlichen. Grimmling visualisiert sein Thema: das menschliche Drama der Existenz, den Kampf, die Tragödie. Große Flächen, weite Schwünge und ineinander verkettete Bänder ziehen sich als schwarze Bahnen über die Leinwand. Das Schwarz setzt sich durch, wird zum Rausch und über zwei Jahrzehnte hinweg zum einzigen Bildinhalt. Die vorliegende Publikation ist die erste Monografie, die das Gesamtwerk des Malers vorstellt.
