Description

Book Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn't Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm's length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn't been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

While going through their parent's belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.

Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.

Review Quotes

"Home is Where the Bodies Are is a master thriller writer's deliciously f*cked-up answer to The Inheritance Games, pitting three flawed siblings against one another in the wake of their mother's death and shocking will. Only, in true Jeneva Rose fashion, there's a devious, life-changing twist: Mom and Dad may have committed murder, and the family inheritance is actually a legacy of violence that threatens to ensnare the siblings for good. Sharp writing, a breakneck pace, and a surprisingly tender heart make this story of familial loyalty, grief, and murder impossible to put down."

-- "Ashley Winstead, author of Midnight Is the Darkest Hour"

"Home Is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose is a tense and harrowing story of family tragedy, lifelong secrets, and unresolved childhood jealousies. Rose's deep insight into the complexities of human nature and her gorgeous prose carried me along in a single breathless read. Deeply moving and utterly engaging, readers will love this book!"

-- "Karen Dionne, internationally bestselling author of The Marsh King's Daughter and The Wicked Sister"

"Rose demonstrates a formidable command of character...Fans will enjoy the ride."

-- "Publishers Weekly"

"Secrets, lies, estranged siblings, and a decades-old mystery that's clambering its way to the surface one victim at a time--Home Is Where the Bodies Are has it all and then some. This original, fast-paced, flawless thriller had me switching allegiances and theories about who- and whydunit as I frantically turned the pages to get to the truth. Jeneva Rose is a powerhouse of an author, and an exceptionally talented writer. Sign me up for whatever she comes up with next!"

-- "Hannah Mary McKinnon, internationally bestselling author of The Revenge List"

"Home Is Where the Bodies Are is fast-paced and propulsive with characters you truly empathize with and an ending so surprising and satisfying, you'll immediately recommend this book to all of your friends. This is Jeneva Rose at her best."

-- "Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of Local Woman Missing and Just the Nicest Couple"

"It's an odd feeling to read something that feels so nostalgic and relatable yet still surprises you at the turn of every page. Home Is Where the Bodies Are is fast-paced and fresh and will have you rushing to your parents' attic to unearth your own dark family secrets."

-- "Ashley Flowers, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All Good People Here"

Not the Best

This book was ok. The storyline was ok. The twist at the end, ok. It's a nice filler book if you don't have anything else to read. Better books that will raise your blood pressure and increase your anxiety are: The Perfect Marriage, The Perfect Divorce, and This Girl's A Killer by Emma C. Wells.

Eh

I would rate this 3.7 rather than 4 stars. It was good then boring then good then boring up until the very last page. I could’ve skipped straight to the last handful of pages and figured out the entire book. The potential was there and lived up to (for the most part), just took longer than necessary to get there.

Another Twisty Read from Jeneva Rose!

This was my second Jeneva Rose book, and once again, no disappointment. I really enjoy her writing style. It’s fast-paced without feeling rushed, and she’s great at keeping you on your toes. I’m usually pretty good at guessing twists early on in thrillers, but even when I thought I had it figured out, she still managed to sneak in a few surprises I didn’t see coming. (That is rare!) The characters were all very different, but I stayed invested in each of them—including the side characters, which says a lot. And the ending? Very well done. It wrapped up in a way that felt satisfying without being too neat. As soon as I finished, I added another one of her books to my TBR. (Highly recommend reading with a friend so you can discuss theories as you go!!)

Better than yiur typicla murder mystery

The story keeps your interest and you get to know the three main characters well. It’s better writing than your typical murder mystery.

Fast read

It was a great book! I finished it in a couple days. I figured out who the culprit was about half way. The ending did have a twist I wasn’t expecting.

Better than I thought it would be

The book was very good and took the perspectives of different characters which is very interesting. Also the twist in the story really wasn’t predictable for me and I ate it up.

I bought this book because the cover caught my eye checking out . My first book read by this author but will now be my last . A little slow at one part but I really loved the two sisters in the story.

At least the cover is cute

It was a quick read. I figured out the "big twist" early in the book but was hoping that something would happen to make me feel otherwise. Never happened! The cover is very cute, but the story is whatever.

Loved it

I absolutely loved this book. The cover is what made me buy it, but storyline was great! I’m not a huge book reader and beginning to read more, but this one kept me on my toes.

Just didn't do it for me..

I think the cover of the book itself is the best part! But you know what they say, “never judge a book by its cover”. And that was the case for me with this one😔 Had such high hopes! Loved the writing, loved the story line, but I hated that the ending was blatantly obvious in the very beginning. Throughout the whole book, I just kept waiting for a twist to come along & prove me wrong…even just a little baby twist- but, no twists. None. 0. Zip. There was this big buildup until the very end of the book as to ‘who done it’, but when it’s that obvious right away from the beginning all the way to the end, & there was literally nothing that happened to even steer you away from your prediction, it just falls flat. And there was SO MUCH potential for at least a twist or 2 to at least attempt to throw the reader off…because again- storyline was great. But man, isn’t the cover really cool?!? 😁
