When she was just five years old, Melissa Braxton watched her father take her mother's life. Separated from her sister, Lola, at that time, Melissa grew up with a strong desire to help those stuck in abusive relationships. It's why she became a therapist and opened a domestic abuse shelter. After losing a leg to a gunshot wound in the line of duty, Phil Osbourne has felt like a man without a purpose--until he hears Melissa's story and decides to use his Special Forces contacts to track down her missing sister. He knows what he discovers will break Melissa's heart. What he doesn't realize is that helping the women reunite will bring the cartel down on them like the category 5 hurricane striking Miami.

Honor’s Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman is the third book in her Love & Honor series. Melissa Braxton runs a domestic abuse shelter. Phil Osbourne uses his contacts to locate Melissa’s long-lost sister. He had no idea what kind of terror his compassionate act was going to unleash. This was a very intense story. The action was non-stop. Something new was always just around the corner. I received this book from the publisher for my honest review.
Phil's story was worth the wait

I've loved all the books in the series but this is absolutely my favorite. Phil Osbourne snagged my attention in the first book when his world fell apart and his story was so worth the wait. His tremendous faith and strength to overcome his darkest days and fears make him an incredible hero. Despite his insecurity and grumpiness, Melissa loves Phil anyway and slowly draws him out of his cave with her persistent, bold, yet tender affection. There are some sensitive scenes in the book since Phil works in the medical field and Melissa works as a safehouse coordinator and counselor, but these add to the stark reality of how people suffer on a daily basis because of others' cruelty. The action and suspense in this book is different from the overseas combat in the first book and governmental work tracking down terrorists in the second book. Powerful drug cartels, women needing help and shelter, and two people's passion to protect those who are powerless make for some pretty intense suspense and action. I would recommend reading the series in order so that you can get the full flavor of who Phil is and how far he's come. I'm hoping for more books in the series! I received the book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

If you are looking for an action driven, edge of your seat thriller this is the book for you. It does contain sensitive issues that could be a trigger for some readers. I liked the main female character Melissa. Coming from an abusive childhood, she now runs a shelter that houses people who need to find a safe place. She and her friend carefully bring men, women and children there and help them escape their abusive relationship. I admire all the hard work Melissa and her friend have taken to make others feel safe. They give them a chance to start a new life. Phil has seen his share of trauma from being in the service. Losing a leg at times makes him feel like he is less than a man which holds him back from relationships. I liked how he wanted to do something meaningful for Melissa and was able to find her sister that she lost touch with when they were separated as children. What he didn’t know was the danger Melissa’s sister was in. There is a good faith element in the story which illustrates how we can call out to Jesus in our time of need. The story takes on a dangerous man who is involved in the drug cartel. He also happens to be married to Melissa’s sister. With determination Phil and Mellisa team up to help her sister that brings trouble to everyone at the shelter. There is a leak somewhere in the government that puts lives in danger. A tragedy shakes the operation to its core. I liked how the author keeps readers guessing as the story has twists that kept you on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss this intense story of faith, danger, secrets and healing from your past. I received a copy of this book from The Librarything Early Reader Program. The review is my own opinion.

As a child, Melissa watched her father beat her pregnant mother to death. Now an adult, Melissa runs a shelter for abused people, but her biggest desire is to be reunited with her baby sister, Lola, who she hasn't seen since the night her mother died. Phil is a former Special Forces soldier who had to leave the service after losing his leg. Although a doctor, he is is working as an EMT. Why would he do that? He loves Melissa but won't act on it because he feels he isn't good enough. Secretly, he has been searching for Lola. Rescuing Lola opens up a huge can of worms since she is the wife of a dangerous drug lord, and is kept under lock and key. Her escape releases a small army of well-armed killers who search for Lola night and day. People are threatened, beaten, and die. Will Lola live long enough to get into protective custody, and get a new identity? Who can be trusted to help since at least one of the American agents is dirty, are there more? Third in a series, this story stands on its own. This tale is full of action, but is clean, and includes times God helps them when nothing else can. I recommend this five-star story to fans of action and suspense. Revell Books has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, Honor's Refuge, for the purpose of review.

“He just wanted to quit fighting, to quit resenting how the failures in his life, the decisions he’d made, and the loss of his leg made him feel,” Phil realizes in Hallee Bridgeman’s novel, Honor’s Refuge. ~ What ~ The third book in the Love & Honor series, this three-hundred-and-fifty-two-page paperback targets those interested in romantic suspense involving moving on in life despite its challenges and heartbreaks. With no profanity, topics of drug addiction, physical abuse, drug cartels, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The beginning includes reviews, a list of the author’s written books, and a dedication while the ending has a dozen discussion questions, food recipes, a biography, and advertisements. In this tale, it has been two years since Phil Osbourne lost his leg in a Special Forces mission, and he still has been having trouble accepting his new identity as a man. But Melissa Braxton, a woman who runs a domestic abuse shelter, has had him in her sights, begging for his attention and love. When Phil and his friends find Melissa’s missing sister is the wife of a Columbian cartel teniente, the couple works together to keep her only family safe, even during a hurricane. ~ Why ~ This is a quick read that follows one of the military members in the previous books in the series. It is detailed and descriptive regarding what mainly women go through when they are abused in the home and how they fear retaliation when they have escaped. I like that Phil’s insecurities and inadequacies were realistic and honest. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not care for the prayers to God or Biblical references. Others who are not interested in stories about domestic abuse may avoid the book. While I appreciated Melissa’s often confrontational manner, I found her a bit pushy, demanding, and always right. ~ Wish ~ Although the protagonists included God in their daily lives, it would be encouraging if the read added the plan of eternal salvation. ~ Want ~ If you enjoyed the other two books in the Love & Honor series, this one focuses on one couple’s love during hardship and offers grace and redemption in dealing with feeling unworthy and unimportant. Thanks to Revell for furnishing this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
