"A powerful work." --Kirkus Reviews

This character-driven book expands child trafficking awareness while exploring one girl's search for belonging, self-love, and acceptance. Thirteen-year-old Julia would much rather work with horses at the rescue barn than worry about things like dating and makeup. But when her BFF meets a boy at camp, Julia's determined not to get left behind. After a makeover from her older sister, she posts a picture of herself online and gets a comment from Tyler--a seemingly nice kid who lives across town. As they DM more and more, Julia's sure that Tyler understands her in a way her family never has. Even better, their relationship earns her tons of attention at school. Then Julia finds out Tyler's true plan, and her world is turned upside down. She fiercely guards her secret, but could her silence allow her friends to fall into the same trap?

Review Quotes

"Themes of human trafficking, social media, middle school adjustments are on target. The development of family relationships and the challenge of growing up in this period of time teaches without judgement." --Children's Literature

"Dunlap writes with compassion about factors that render adolescents particularly vulnerable to trafficking and what it takes to keep them safe; she offers insights into how excruciating self-consciousness prevents victims from seeking help or sharing their experiences. A powerful work." --Kirkus Reviews

This incredibly important book handles a difficult topic with skill and sensitivity. Beautifully written and full of heart and hope, readers will care deeply about Julia and feel as if they are right there with her on her journey. I urge you to read this and share it with the young people in your life and also to spread the word, because It Happened on Saturday is a book that could truly save lives.

A very well written book about a very relevant topic in today’s world. Julia risks her own newly found popularity to do the right thing and prevent others from falling into the social media dangers that she fell prey to. This is a subject that every reader will relate to in one context or another, especially middle schoolers trying to “fit in”, but really anyone. The author does an excellent job getting the reader to think about potential consequences of bad decisions. I like how the storyline takes Julia right to the brink of disaster twice (once for Julia herself and once for her friend), yet both times Julia is able to prevent the potential tragedies through courage and smart decisions. In the end, that courage earns Julia the true friendship she desires. What I like most about the book is that it really hits home in making the reader realize that this can happen to anyone.
