Advance Praise & Reviews"Jesuit and Zen-Master is a marvelous book. Ursula Baatz has invited us into the humble search and patient journey of Fr. Enomiya-Lassalle. On every page she shows us how Zen--mingling with his Ignatian way too--came to rest finally in the graced enlightenment of kenshō, satori. Jerry Brown's foreword and the closing reflections by Maria Reis-Habito and Ruben Habito beautifully frame an inspiring message meant for readers everywhere." --Francis X. Clooney, SJ, Parkman Professor of Divinity, Harvard University
Hugo Lassalle (he later took the name Enomiya-Lassalle) (1898-1990) was a German Jesuit stationed in mission to Japan. There he survived the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and became deeply engaged in exploration and practice of Zen, which he believed was compatible with Christian faith. He became the pioneer of this dialogue, giving rise to a whole school of Christian-Zen dialogue/practice and winning approval from the Vatican.

"Hugo Enomiya-Lassalle belongs to that extraordinary generation of twentieth-century Catholic religious who labored to understand by experience the meaning of Asian spiritual traditions for Christian mysticism. In Ursula Baatz's powerful retelling, Fr. Lassalle emerges as one of the greats of this generation, one who shouldered the epochal spiritual and institutional task of establishing Zen as an authentic Christian path, and as a truly enculturated form for the Japanese church."--Matthew Z. Vale, assistant professor, comparative theology, Boston College
