Large Waistband

Why did they make the waistbands so large?? My kids are 3 & 5. Most pjs fits snug so I don’t typically have an issue with buying up a size up. I bought a 4 & 6, it just fit wrong in every place. I will be keeping it because I like the pattern and it has matching adult pjs. Will try to alter it somehow!
