About the Book

Sisters Emmy and Callie have no secrets between them until a mysterious accident robs one of a crucial memory and sparks troubling visions. Only through letters they exchange while painfully separated do the sisters reveal hidden truths leading back to a fateful springtime day--and a chilling September night--that changed them both forever.

Book Synopsis

Two Sisters. One Single Event. A Family Changed Forever.

At the turn of the twentieth century, sisters Emmy and Callie Bullock are living a privileged life as the only daughters of a wealthy Alabama cotton farmer when their well-ordered household gets turned upside down by the arrival of Lily McGee. Arrestingly beautiful, Lily quickly--and innocently--draws the wrong kind of attention. Meanwhile, Callie meets a man who offers her the freedom to abandon social constraints and discover her truest self.

After Lily has a baby, Callie witnesses something she was never meant to see--or did she? Her memory is a haze, just an image in her mind of Emmy standing on a darkened riverbank and cradling Lily's missing baby girl. Only when the sisters are separated does the truth slowly come to light through their letters--including a revelation that will shape the rest of Callie's life.

Bestselling author Valerie Fraser Luesse weaves a complex and suspenseful tale dripping with intrigue, romance, and Southern charm.

I absolutely loved Letters from My Sister by Valerie Fraser Luesse. Set at the turn of the century, Emmy and Callie live in a well to do household. They enjoy sharing life and working alongside their large family. Though different personalities they throughly enjoy one another. Emmy is courting Knox, a wonderful love story. However, Knox's brother is not so kind. Callie notices Solomon, who is restoring a beloved neighboring homestead. Callie is intrigued, and Solomon is such a gracious gentleman. Will Callie have the opportunity to live in this beloved house with Solomon? Suddenly a pregnant Lily arrives at the estate. Lily's husband has passed in a train accident, or was it an accident? Lily cannot safely live on the farm. The night that Lily and her baby girl escape Callie has a very strange experience. Was there something she can't recall about that night? How will she remember? Honestly, I couldn’t put this book down. I am running to find more books by this author. I absolutely loved it. There were sometimes when I was reading and crying. I highly recommend this book. It is quite the plot with amazing twists and turns! I highly recommend!

Compelling Southern Historical Fiction

Letters from My Sister is a touching story of sisterly love that's set in Alabama in the early years of the twentieth century. I found myself on a roller-coaster of emotions as I read of the separation that Callie and Emmy Bullock face when Callie suffers memory loss and Emmy becomes seriously ill. Author Valerie Frazer Luesse shares a compelling story filled with memorable characters, mystery, and intrigue. This is a story of hope, faith, and family but there is also mention of spiritualism and racial bigotry. And yes, there is a lovely relationship for those who crave romance! I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Revell Reads. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

I have enjoyed previously released books from the talented author, Valerie Fraser Luesse and was ready to get my hands on her newest, Letters from My Sister. I thought it was a pretty good read. I was intrigued in reading in this and had to continue on turning the pages to find out what would be revealed in the end. I loved it. I am giving Letters from My Sister a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe readers who enjoy clean historical fiction will not want to miss out reading this one. I am interested to see what other releases Valerie Fraser Luesse has in store for her fans in the future. I received a paperback copy of Valeria Fraser Luesse’s Letters from My Sister from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Captivating

Set in Alabama in the early 1900s, Letters From My Sister tells the story of the strong relationship between a prominent farming family and the family who had served them in so many ways over the decades. It also tells the story of two closely knit sisters who were quite different one from the other, and whose faith and love never wavered. Then nearing the halfway point of the story it morphs into a mystery whose solution appears to be unthinkable. It is also at this point that I became so captivated that I was unable to walk away from the book for any longer than absolutely necessary. The one thing that absolutely stands out in the book is Luesse's character development. She creates characters that readers feel like they truly have come to know on a deeply personal level. I am very grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Letters From My Sister from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

A Captivating Southern Tale

Luesse delivers an insightful glimpse of farm and family life in turn of the century Alabama, my home state, so I was intrigued by her storyline, characters and historical perspective depicting the racial tensions and socioeconomic mix of that day without making it the primary theme. With its strong family bonds and even closer sisters, this story details the hard work, expectations and trials of its members while facing situations and characters who would try to pull this family apart. Secrets, mystery and separation eventually shroud the sisters with questions yet each trusts the other and keeps silent out of a need to protect the other. The conflict and plot twists Luesse affords her readers are well written and push the pace to find out more. I loved sitting in the middle of history, reading as a fly on the wall and you will, too. These characters are so endearing I would love to visit them again. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.

SEEING SISTERS' LOVE

“You seek truth. That good. But you gon’ pay a price for y’ freedom,” Tirzah tells Callie in Valeria Fraser Luesse’s novel, Letters from My Sister. ~ What ~ This three-hundred-and-fifty-two-page paperback targets those interested in historical fiction about dealing with memory loss, heartbreak, and death. With no profanity, the topics of illness, physical abuse, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes an author’s note, acknowledgments, an excerpt from another book, the author’s biography, and advertisements. In this story set in the early twentieth century in rural Alabama, sisters Callie and Emmy are as close as peas in a pod as they come of age. When Emmy becomes sick and Callie has memory loss from an accident, the sisters write sporadic letters back and forth, confiding in each other their problems. With other characters who bring joy and sorrow to both siblings, the tale shows how love helps us through our darkest hours. ~ Why ~ This is a stoic, tragic read of commitment and support to family while finding romantic love among tragedies. I liked how the sisters were each other’s best friends and wanted success for one another. The descriptions about memory loss, sickness, a sawmill, and life on a farm were nicely written. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not like books that reference God and prayer might pass on this read, but it is not overstated or overly done. Although there is some light humor, the story is sad. I was uncomfortable reading about the many visions and seers’ predictions as they did not seem appropriate for what I thought was a Christian book. ~ Wish ~ The title is not clear in that the story is not written in first person and there are so few sisters’ letters contained in it, making one wonder if only one sister’s letters mattered. Since it does mention God and prayers to Him, I wish it contained the eternal plan of salvation instead of someone “being free from the juju.” ~ Want ~ If you like a read about two sisters who are devoted to one another even during heartbreak, this may interest you, but it is not completely Christ-centered. REPORT THIS AD Thanks to Revell and the author for this complimentary book. I am under no obligation to give a positive review.
