Midland T290 X-Talker® GMRS Walkie Talkie 2 Pack - T290VP4

First set of Midlands in a long time and they didn't disappoint! I haven't tested the range in the woods yet, but so far, they can be heard well from long distances in a suburban area.

Purchased these for the RV. So far so good. Fills the void when there is no cell service

The radio works as advertised, RX is clear, menu is easy to navigate once the mode sequence becomes familiar. Design is very nice, not like a child’s radio. There doesn’t seem to be a single plug car charger available, only a double. Radio is not available as a single radio only as a pair. Removable antenna would be nice if legal. I am very pleased with this radio, wish I could purchase a single unit.

This product is amazing. We use it for all of our outdoor activities along with just having some fun around the house with the kiddos. I would recommend this to anybody who’s using it for anything honestly.

This is a tough review. I am sure the units are just fine but, because you cannot put AA batteries in these, they wouldn't fit our backcountry hunting. The units don't have an individual charger so I cannot use a power pack. I found the features I need for my style of hunting (T77VP5) and will be able to review these after a year of usage.

These are perfect compliments to the GMRS Radio I installed in our Jeep. Range is exceptionally good. Battery life is excellent. Clarity of sound is great.

MY SON-IN-LAW AND I BOTH BOUGHT THE SAME SETUP FOR GENERAL OR EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION. HE ONLY LIVES A FEW MILES AWAY, WITH BOTH OF US BEING INDOORS AT OUR HOUSES AND LOTS OF HOUSES AND TREES BETWEEN US, WE CAN STILL COMMUNICATE.

Bought these as many people do for outdoor activities. Have a GMRS radio in the vehicle wanted a portable version. Long backpacking trips, hunting, day trips, boating etc.... Have held up to a lot of abuse on my end but also feel it lacks (what I would consider an essential feature after using) Why can I not charge these without the basestation using a USB cord from a battery bank or solar panel? It is a feature on the cheaper FRS models; honestly my fault for not looking for a feature that is on the cheaper models. But I was also not looking for FRS.

I like this radio a lot. I have the following radios: t290, gxt1000, and the micro mobile 15watt. All connect to each other flawlessly. Exceptional clarity. I use these for property management operations in a small town. The gxt1000 have noticeably better performance. I can get good radio signal through urban environment and trees for about ~2 miles. With the T290’s I can only get good clarity for about 1 mile in urban setting with trees. Ive switch my entire crew to gxt1000 handhelds and installed the 15watt micromobile stations in the vehicles and loaders. I would recommend the t290 for off-roading, camping, recreational activities, short range communication. I would recommend the gxt1000 for more serious operations, 2 mile range in high obstruction, and maybe 5 miles unobstructed.

We have a group that rides in the mountains on ATV/UTV trails. These are great tools for keeping the lead and last driver communicating and keeping the groups on the same trails. AWESOME for getting the the group back together when separated.

Great battery life a bit disappointed with the range but they work great

I bought these radios to stay in touch with my hunting party in the North Maine Woods. They work great and have tremendous range.

I have these walkie talkies and they are great! they go up to 40 miles and once i talked to one of my friends from snohomish Washington to Olympia Washington! and they are worth it.

Purchased a few months ago to use when off-roading and camping. Much longer range than expected, about 1.5 miles even in tree-filled areas. So far good battery life. I bought an extra set of batteries but only need them when I forget to charge the originals. Volume is good even over loud side-by-side engines. Good quality, only a few scrapes after a couple of heavy drops.

I purchased these radios to replace a pair of old Cobra FRS/GMRS radios. With the recent FCC reg changes it’s tough to give up the FRS convenience but it’s a small price to pay and certainly NOT Midland’s fault. They continue to make great radios and I’m very pleased with this set. Just don’t forget to purchase your license from the FCC.

Tried several times in local hiking trail before my family going for a vacation to Yosemite. The sound and clarity is good. So far enjoy it and will update after the vacation trip.

I purchased this set in advance of buying a mobile unit for my Jeep. The Jeep club I am in is interested in moving everyone towards GMRS and we wanted to compare the features and range to our traditional CB's. Many of our members are new to off-road and finding something simple that everyone could use was a priority. Our first outing was a simple trail ride (actually more of a spring color tour) that consisted of 60 Jeeps. We positioned the hand helds at the front and rear of the caravan. As you can imagine 60 jeeps gets spread out quite a bit. The T290's far out performed the CB's in both range and clarity. It was a very good example that helped us sell the idea to club members and many have already committed or made purchases from Midland. The only real drawback I experienced is that you are not supposed to leave the radios on the charging base. It would be nice to be able to leave them on a 'maintain' setting. PROS: compact design, pretty easy to use, very good clarity of signal, good 'feel' (doesn't feel cheap), nice range for a hand held device CONS: charger does not maintain the battery, can't use any other battery source (AA's) other than the rechargeable that comes with it, menu and displays can be hard to understand if you are not familiar with terminology Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. I have ordered the MXT275 to mount in my JL Wrangler and I think these T290's will make a great addition on the trail for spotting or just to loan out to those without a GMRS.
