About the Book

This insightful book provides perspectives from minority ethnic healthcare professionals across the career spectrum, from healthcare assistants to CEOs. Filled with illuminating case studies and interviews, readers can learn about the reality of underlying racial prejudices in healthcare and the practical solutions needed to address them.

Book Synopsis

Discussions around racism in healthcare often lead nowhere and decentre the people that it impacts the most. This book provides a voice for those who are spoken about, but rarely given the platform to share their perspectives, realities, and solutions as minority ethnic healthcare workers.

Filled with powerful and illuminating case studies and interviews, readers are shown a range of minority ethnic perspectives on every rung of the career ladder, from healthcare assistants to CEOs. Dirty politics, discrimination, and barriers to career progression are all discussed within the context of working within a system that has yet to confront its underlying prejudices.

Beyond discussing these realities, this book also offers insightful solutions and strategies, not only for minority ethnic staff looking to support their own development, but also for healthcare management and policy makers who are serious about dismantling discriminatory practices. Heena Mahmood offers a thoughtful examination on what can practically be done to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment for healthcare workers and patients.

Review Quotes

This book offers an in depth understanding of everyday microaggressions experienced by minority ethnic NHS staff, including their emotional and professional impact. Through powerful storytelling, the author not only exposes the challenges but also provides practical recommendations for change. A must-read for anyone committed to improving workplace culture and creating a more inclusive healthcare system.--Baroness Shaista Gohir OBE, CEO of Muslim Women's Network UK

Heena Mahmood manages to comprehensively capture the nuanced complexities around racisms faced by ethnic minorities working in the NHS/healthcare and then presents them in a digestible, engaging and informative manner.--Owen Chinembiri

Heena Mahmood has written a clever and insightful book. She dips into history and weaves case studies with pauses for the reader to reflect. This is no easy topic but she handles it with disarming frankness based on her own experiences, facts and well formed opinion. I recommend it.--Roy Lilley, Health Policy Analyst and Commentator
