Juvenile racers, however, present a strikingly different coloration, featuring a tan or grayish base with a series of dark brown or reddish blotches down their backs, a pattern that gradually fades to the adult black as they mature. While their scientific name constrictor might suggest otherwise, they do not kill their prey by constriction; instead, they typically pin their victim with a loop of their body and swallow it alive.
