Humble Beginnings: Nubian Heritage is the brainchild of two New York street vendors. In 1992, fresh out of college and without jobs, Rich and Nyema embarked on a mission to produce luxurious natural products from traditional African recipes with fair trade ingredients. Today Nubian Heritage offers culturally authentic natural products inspired by global ancient healing philosophies. Although Nubian Heritage products are no longer made in bath tubs, little else has changed; the company still makes its own products, still uses fair trade ingredients and still invests in community commerce.
Heritage: Historical references to Shea Butter, a staple of African pharmacology, date back to the reported Shea Butter caravans of Cleopatra’s Egypt. Shea butter is rich in essential fatty acids, which moisturize and soften skin. Frankincense has aromatherapy benefits. Myrrh dates back to an Ebers papyrus (circa 1580) recipe for a facial mask. Symbolizing growth, this package pattern highlights the shea nut, a symbol of collective empowerment through our community commerce supply chain.

Love this, never buying again
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this lotion. Contrary to other users I love the smell. But I'm also a first-time purchaser. This lotion is thick and luxurious. I feel like I'm treating myself when I put it on. The problem is that it's impossible to get it out of the tube. This product has a thick, almost body-butter like consistency. You can't put a lotion like this into a tall, narrow tube container, put a button cap on it, and expect the consumer to be able to squeeze it out unless said customers are professional grip-strength trainers. I am not a professional grip-strength trainer. I don't even know if that's a real job. What I do know is that if Nubian Heritage starts selling this in a tub or pot that I can put my hand into, I'll buy this every time. Until then, I'm looking for my second favorite body lotion.

RECIPE CHANGE SMELLS SO BAD!!!!!
I don’t know what y’all did to destroy this lotion but my mom and I have been using it for over a decade and now it smells like cheap nauseating coconut lotion. Literally makes me wanna gag. Go back to the original recipe whatever you changed…. Please!!!

Why mess with perfection??
This product was my holy grail for years, but they completely changed the formulation and now it smells disgusting—sickeningly sweet and overpowering. It’s unrecognizable from the original. So disappointed and sad.

Disappointed
I’ve had my bottle of Raw Shea Butter body lotion for 1.5 mos. Today noticed something green in the lotion. I opened it and pulled more out. Additionally, right through the bottle you can see more of the same stuff. I’d like answered yo the situation I’m experiencing as I have never moved this bottle from my house so it wasn’t left outside to get warm.

This has been my favorite lotion for a long time. I am heartbroken that the fragrance has changed. I really looked forward to using it, but now it's like a totally different product. Please bring back the old fragrance and formula.

Rich and creamy
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love this lotion. So wonderful for sensitive skin. No more flaky, dry skin. The only recommendation would be to change the packaging to a jar. The lotion is so rich, it’s difficult to get it out of the bottle. I usually cut the bottle open and scoop it into a jar. If it’s rick like a body butter, it should be in a jar like a body butter.

So sad that the fragrance and formulation changed!
I've used this product for many years and loved the creaminess, effectiveness, and mild scent. I bought a new (shorter, fatter) bottle at Whole Foods today and was shocked when I opened the bottle and put some on my hands. It now has a strong, unpleasant smell of fake vanilla and coconut - so strong that it gave me a little headache, and when my husband walked into the room he said "yuk, what's that!" Reading the label, I noticed that the formulation changed - previously the ingredient list said fragrance from essential oils and now it just says fragrance - I'm guessing the change is to something artificial. There are other ingredient changes as well. So sorry that we won't have this product to rely on any more - it did a great job with dry Colorado skin.

This has been my favorite lotion for years and it just doesnt have the same smell or texture anymore. It seems to me to have gone down in quality and I'm so sad! I miss when it was thick and hard to squeeze out of the bottle...

I have been using the Raw Shea Butter Body Lotion for years, and it's always had a nice, light fragrance. Now, it is WAAAYYYY too "perfumey". So disappointed. Will have to switch brands for sure.

I LOVED this lotion, I purchased the hemp and vetiver scent once a month for years, it was the best body lotion I’ve ever used. It was so thick and creamy. But as many others have said, they changed the formula and it’s not nearly as good. The firsts ingredient used to be Shea butter but now it’s water and you can really feel the difference. Such a bummer, I haven’t found a lotion as good since. Nubian Heritage, please bring back the old formula!!!

Luxurious lotion
This lotion is the most hydrating and softening lotion I've ever used! My skin has never felt so soft and luxurious. The smell is amazing too! The only downside is it is almost impossible to get it out of the bottle. You have to squeeze the bottle almost in half and I have arthritis in my hands so it's hard to squeeze that hard.

This might be a great lotion if you can get it out of the bottle. Why would you package it like this? You certainly can't squirt it out....I can't even pound it out. I use it all over my body and it certainly is a challenge...took me forever. Thinking about returning it.

Love the lotion. Hate the packaging!
Bought this lotion a few weeks ago because I loved the smell and was looking for something on the thicker side. The thickness is great and my skin feels moisturized afterwards but I’m battling to get the lotion out of the bottle. With how thick the lotion is, you guys really need to find a different way of packaging it….maybe putting it in a tub instead of bottle. The lotion itself, I would rate a 5 but overall I only gave a 3 because of the struggle I’m having getting it out of the bottle. Please change the packaging otherwise I don’t think I will be buying it again.

It might take a bit to absorb but it’s definitely not a huge deal, but just something to be mindful of. I definitely feel like it moisturizes my skin well whenever I use it.

Amazing smell & works!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am not a lotion lover at all and actually avoid it (unless it’s for my face), but this lotion smells very nice and didn’t leave me feeling like I had a layer of goop on my skin! I like to use it after I shave and it’s thin enough to be comfortable while still doing a good job. The bottle is also fairly large which is nice— there is no need to constantly be running to the store for more. As I said, it smells *amazing* and isn’t too strong or overbearing. The smell doesn’t last super long on the skin which some may not appreciate, but this wasn’t an issue for my preferences. I definitely recommend this lotion!
