Tough at first
I love Ruth Ware’s books but this one took a little bit for me to get into. If you’re struggling, keep reading because I promise it will be worth it! It’s definitely a whodunnit book and when you figure out who it is, you can’t wait to see how the rest unfolds! Definitely not my favorite book by Ruth Ware but very much worth reading!

Corporate Retreats are Murder
When the key employees of the internet startup Snoop show up at a chalet in the French Alps, they are expecting a week of presentations and skiing. However, there is tension brewing just below the surface thanks to a buyout deal that has split the board. The tension only grows worse when heavy snow and an avalanche cuts everyone off from the rest of the world and one of the members of a group goes missing somewhere out in the snow. As the hours pass, it becomes clear a killer is in the group. Will help arrive before they are all dead? While the cast of isolated characters trope is not new to the mystery genre, Ruth Ware quickly makes it her own in this page turning thriller. I love how she so successfully isolated the characters. The plot is wonderful with tension rising early before the characters fully realize the danger they are in. The twists kept me engaged the entire way through the nail-biting climax. The characters could have been a little stronger overall. Don’t get me wrong, I cared about them and the outcome, but I felt like many of them stayed two dimensional and those we got to know better bordered on the cliché. Being a thriller, I expected more foul language than in the books I typically read, but it was a bit excessive for my tastes. Still, these are nitpicks in an overall wonderful thriller.

Predictable but, interesting enough
I’m a big Ruth Ware fan and she has thrown me for a loop with past reads but, this one was predictable from the start. There was plenty of alluding to the culprit’s past hardships endured and why the triggers occurred but, barely any context or closure there...in fact it was a bit scattered between abuse at home and bullying outside of it. No elaboration just touch and go glimpses of the past. For me it felt a bit open ended and a more gradual, strung out reveal than I’m accustomed to with these sort of books. I’ll say what was intended to be the big bombshell was predictable there was plenty of intrigue and sprinkles of surprises to keep me interested.

Predictable
This is definitely no Agatha Christie Novel. From the very beginning it was very predictable and was definitely missing the Wow effect. My daughter really liked it but for me it was just meh

Would have been a 5 if I couldn’t predict..
And Then There Were None + The Guest List 10 current/former employees of a booming UK music app startup (for those of you from the States, think Silicon Valley yuppies) decide to take a holiday at a French chalet to make the biggest decision of their lives. When an avalanche hits, they and the two workers start to see what lies in the heart of (wo)men.. I enjoyed this book. It’s my first Ruth Ware (and won’t be my last). What would have made it a 5-star for me was structuring the book a bit differently so that it wasn’t obvious from before the halfway point “whodunit.” I don’t want to say much more than that for spoilers, but I think you’ll see when you get there. I did love the way she fleshed out the characters, and the way she opened each chapters. Buy this for yourself or someone looking for a no -so-cozy mystery. If you’re twisted, get it for someone about to go on their first ski trip.
