Mixed Feelings!
The Secret Christmas Library by Jenny Colgan is not what I expected. I picked The Secret Christmas Library because I was intrigued by the title (who can resist a secret library) and Mirren’s occupation as a book finder. I have mixed feelings about this story. While there were some charming elements and the intriguing missing book, I noticed several inconsistencies, there were intimate scenes, rushed sections, and periods of slow pacing. Mirren Sutherland’s full history is revealed over just a handful of pages. Mirren has a meet-cute with Jamie McKinnon, a Scottish laird, who could use her services. I was curious how Jamie made it home in time to receive Mirren’s call (a ten-hour train ride and Jamie gave her the castle’s landline). Jamie leaves a train ticket for Mirren at her workplace, but how did he know where she worked (did he look it up, did she tell him and I missed it, did he learn about it from an acquaintance). These are just two of the inconsistencies. The mystery of the missing book had me curious and I wanted to see how it would turn out (I also wanted to see if it led to a secret library). I did not like the inappropriate intimate scenes at the end of the book. I am curious how they came up with the title for this book, but I did not see how it played into the story (kept hoping for a connection, but one did not appear). Now you can see why I have mixed feelings about The Secret Christmas Library. I hope Jenny Colgan’s next book is less rushed and more like her other creations.
