Q: Has anyone applied this to a white-painted surface and then put a clear coat over top? What color is it when it is not glowing? A pale green? Thanks!

submitted by Sam - 5 years ago
  • A: Happy to help, Sam! Yes, Rust-Oleum Imagine Glow in the Dark Spray Paint does have a light green color to it. This paint does work best over a white surface and it can be clear coated. If clear coating, we recommend a light coat to ensure the best results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q: What color does it dry if used on a black surface, specifically black umbrellas?

submitted by Jen Likes - 2 years ago
  • A: We're happy to help, Jen. Rust-Oleum Specialty Glow in the Dark Spray Paint dries to a slightly clear finish with a green hue. However, we do not recommend applying this product to an umbrella as the flexing from the surface can cause the paint to crack and peel. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q: Can this be used on an earth tone rock or should the rock be painted white first?

submitted by DIY mom - 4 years ago
  • A: Happy to help! For the best results, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Glow in the Dark Spray Paint over a white or light color surface. If possible, we recommend priming the surface white. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Guests are saying

This glow in the dark spray paint has received mixed feedback from guests. While some found it effective for creating fun decorations, especially for Halloween, others were disappointed with its performance, noting that it requires multiple heavy coats and a white base for optimal results. Guests appreciated its ease of use and the fun factor it adds to projects, particularly for kids' rooms and outdoor decor. However, concerns about transparency and the need for extensive application persist.

I found this to be a waste of money. I tried using it on an outdoor Halloween decoration and barely anything was seen.

Thank you, Krystle, for sharing your experience with Rust-Oleum Specialty Glow In The Dark Spray Paint. For the most dramatic glow the paint must be charged under a light. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Little to no glow. Not worth it
    1 reply from Rust-OleumSupport team - 1 year ago
Let's talk about this, Maria! For the best results, Rust-Oleum Imagine Glow in the Dark Spray Paint is recommended to be applied over a white or light colored surface. It is highly recommended to prime the object with a white primer, such as Ultra Cover 2X White primer. The darker the object is, the less likely the object will glow in the dark. The product needs to dry completely and charge under direct light for 2–3 hours for maximum glow. The painted object can be charged in natural or artificial light. The closer, more direct, and more consistent the strength of the light is, the better the object will glow. Any shadows, blockage of light, or inconsistency of light during charging (i.e. gradual sunset) will affect the objects' ability to glow. The object can glow up to 8 hours under ideal conditions. Please note that the glow will continue to fade over time and will not be as strong as it was immediately after charging. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

I read other reviews and so I decided to do a base coat of another green. I also let it activate in the sun- but it did not work. So disappointed esp because of the price!

I found this to work very well. However, your REALLY need to shake it well-I shake for 2-3 minutes-also shake between long sprays. I sprayed it directly on mini-hay bales and corn stalks for my Halloween decor and it glows better than the stuff from the Halloween stores-and it's cheaper.

Not worth the money. We were trying to make our skelly-boi glow again and once we seen this in-store, we were very excited to try it. The paint sprays on CLEAR and even after multiple coats, the object(s) are still not glowing. Save your money or invest in a different product! We are disappointed to say the least.
    1 reply from Rust-OleumSupport team - 2 years ago
Thanks for your feedback. When using Rust-Oleum Specialty Glow In The Dark Paint, be sure to apply it over a white or light colored surface. After vigorously shaking for at least one minute once the mixing ball begins to rattle, hold the can 10-16” from the surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Apply 2 or more coats a few minutes apart for the best coverage and effect. Make sure to charge the painted surface in natural or artificial light for 2–3 hours for maximum glow. Following this should result in an excellent glow that lasts 4–8 hours. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 13

Oh no, not something we like to hear. For best results using Rust-Oleum Imagine Glow In The Dark Spray Paint, apply over a white or light colored surface. Holding the can 10-16” from the surface, spraying in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Keep the can the same distance from the surface, keeping it in motion while spraying. Apply 2 or more coats a few minutes apart until the desired coverage has been achieved. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

    Super Duper Transparent -

Notfluffy - 4 years ago, Verified purchaser
It will glow after you apply a huge amount in several coats. Hence the three stars- BUT it is very transparent and almost clear not the luminous Green Glow the can promotes. I should have painted the items green first then sprayed them. The label should read: transparent snot. You can see in my photos the white flower and box I sprayed-
    1 reply from Rust-OleumSupport team - 4 years ago

This product did not work at all on my stepping stones. No glow. Nothing. I washed and dried the stones and then applied two coats of glow in the dark paint. Then they were in the direct sunlight for at least 6 hours. No glow at all that night. I don’t know what I did wrong. Maybe I should paint the rocks with a white base coat first?? Idk.

I was very skeptical about buying this paint since some other reviews said it did not glow in the dark, but I decided to test it with another glow paint. The key is you must spray it on a white base coat. I used it on a board for a test, then on a glow in the dark guitar project. After 3 coats, leaving in the sun for 30 minutes, it glows great! The other paint glowed faintly for maybe 5 minutes , but this one did not fade for a couple hours.

This product is just what we needed to add a touch of fun to the kids room. We cut out stars and sprayed them so the kids can pretend they are outside . We also sprayed their names so they also glow. I love how easy it was to use but obviously wasn’t excited about the smell . Definitely want to use this in a well ventilated area . We are so happy we are trying to figure out what else we can spray lol. If you are looking to add a touch of fun to your home this is definitely the product for you.
