Description
Three-disc set includes: The Unknown Terror (1957)When an explorer went missing deep in Mexico, his worried family mounted an expedition to find him. Their journey brought them to a location that the skittish townsfolk deemed the "Cave of Death"-and they'd discover it was aptly named, as a mad researcher (Gerald Milton) used it to house a foamy fungus that turned all it touched into moldy man-beasts. Long-sought fantasy-frightener co-stars Mala Powers, John Howard, Paul Richard, May Wynn. 77 min. BW/Rtg: NR The Colossus Of New York (1958)After a brilliant researcher is killed in an accident, the man's surgeon father and robotics expert brother transplant his brain into the body of a giant robot. Suddenly returned to life as the Colossus Robot, the dead man finds himself missing his wife and child and resenting his family's nature-defying actions. Quicker than you can say "Frankenstein's monster" he begins a rampage of terror. Thrilling sci-fi tale stars John Baragrey, Mala Powers, Otto Kruger, Ross Martin. 70 min. BW/Rtg: NR Destination Inner Space (1966)In the ocean it's a little more difficult for someone to hear you scream, as the staff of an underwater research lab learns after discovering the wreckage of an alien craft on the sea floor. The ship contains a pod which grows into a savage aquatic creature that must be stopped before it's too late. Deep-six sci-fi shocker stars Scott Brady, Gary Merrill, Sheree North. 83 min. C/Rtg: NR Standard and Widescreen; Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; theatrical trailers.

Kino and Paramount have released a 2-disc Blu-ray set of The Unknown Terror (1957), The Colossus Of New York (1958), and Destination Inner Space (1966). It’s a fantastic release, and hopefully we get additional collections of Sci-Fi Chillers in the future. As for the Blu-ray video and audio quality, all three titles look great - sharp, nicely organic, and very film-like. Speckling is common, but never distracting. The audio on all three is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0ch and sounds equally strong. Each title has optional English subtitles. Each title gets a commentary track, and there are also two video sidebar chats. These special features really elevate the replay value of this release. I purchased Sci-Fi Chillers primarily for Destination Inner Space, since I already have the other two titles on Blu-ray. But, after spending time with this new release I’m even happier with my purchase. The older Olive Blu-ray of Colossus Of New York didn’t have subtitles or any special features, so this new version is superior. And, while this new version of The Unknown Terror isn’t necessarily superior to the older Imprint / ViaVision Blu-ray, both versions feature different commentary tracks. So, regardless if you are double-dipping or not, the Sci-Fi Chillers Collection deserves a 5-star rating.
