Q: Are these bone conductive?

submitted by Grumpy Old Man - 2 months ago
  • A: Hi Grumpy Old Man, thanks for reaching out about the Shokz OpenFit True Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds. Shokz OpenFit isn't a bone-conduction headphone. Shokz introduces DirectPitch™, a brand-new audio experience made for OpenFit. It allows for premium audio quality that perfectly balances bold highs, clear mids, and surging bass. If you have any additional questions, we welcome you to contact MyTGTtech at 833-848-8324 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

Summary of reviews

The headphones offer a unique open-fit design that allows for comfort and situational awareness, making them ideal for workouts and daily activities. Guests appreciate the lightweight feel and sound quality, especially for music and audiobooks. However, some have noted issues with battery life, control functionality, and fit, particularly for those with smaller ears. Overall, they are a solid choice for those seeking a comfortable alternative to traditional earbuds.

    I Love Shokz

    5 out of 5 stars

I wish that they would fit me better. They seam a little too big I have trouble answer phone calls because the ear part piece tends to move and it hard to find the area to tap to answer a call and I double tap and it doesn’t answer the call so I think I didn’t tap in the right spot and I don’t know what happens to the call. So I wish they made them a little smaller for people with small ears. I have the OpenRun mini’s and I don’t like that the bar that goes around my head is still too big for me, I like thing closer to my head and the OpenFit seam to be big for me, but I do love them just miner problems that I got to try figuring out. Wish there were more options than what they have like my apple AirPods will automatically read a text message over my music and when finish my music with go back playing, but Shokz can’t do that or won’t do that I wish they did. All's you can do is tap to play/pause music, tap to previous track, tap to next track, double tap to answer a call, double tap to end call, tap and hold to reject a call.

Unintuitive Interface, but Good Sounding and Comfortable

The headphones sound better than I expected, given that they are open-ear headphones. They also feel very comfortable on my ears. I hardly notice they are there, and I can wear them all day without getting fatigued or feeling like there is something blocking my ear. However, the design of the buttons and case are too problematic for me to keep using them. I plan to return the headphones and instead use the Shokz OpenRun. The problem with the case is that it's too bulky to fit in my pocket comfortably, and also the headphones sometimes don't realize they are in the case, so they stay connected to my phone and play audio and phone calls through them while they are in the case. This only happens maybe 5% of the time I put them away, but I believe putting them in the case is the only way to turn them off and automatically disconnect from the phone, so it's very frustrating when this feature doesn't work. Relatedly, the headphones apparently don't have a sensor that detects when they are on your ears, so the touch-sensitive buttons are already on by the time you open the case and pick them up to put them on your ears. Since the buttons are touch-sensitive (instead of tactile), it's nearly impossible for me to place them on my ears without accidentally pressing a button and activating the play/pause or the skip tracks or the voice assistant before the headphones are even on my ears, throwing off what I was trying to do with them when I decided to put them on. Finally, once they are on your ears, the touch sensitive buttons are not reliable to activate, and they lack the full range of customization I would expect. The app only gives you the option to set both the L and R to specific combos, instead of just giving you free range to select exactly what each button does by itself. This results in a combination of actions where I can't get them to work the way I want them. I use the headphone buttons to skip backwards to re-listen to parts of a podcast quite frequently, and there is no way to have that be a function on both headphones, so I have to have the left headphone on all the time, even when I only want one headphone on my ear at a time. I think these headphones would be very good if they fixed those issues, but I am going to return them for now.

    Not what I was expecting

First things first--these are not like other Shokz. They are not bone conduction headphones, but rather have more traditional drivers that sit over the ear opening, but do not go in it. I suppose I should have realized that before I bought them. The case and overall build of the headphones is nice. But the control buttons only answer calls and change tracks. They don't allow for volume control. That has to be done from the source device. Also, pressing on the buttons means pressing the headphone onto your ear, which I found uncomfortable. I returned these and got another pair of OpenRun headphones.

    Just one thing missing

Absolutely love these hradphones. They sound great for what they are and they are so comfortable, one can wear them all day and almost forget that they're there. As many have said, these are never going to sound as good as over the ear cans or your hi-fi system. They do well enough for phone calls but will not supplant more specialized equipment like the Shokz open conference with the book mic. The one thing missing that I've seen on other ear pieces is a locator. Lamentably, I lost one side at an airport in a foreign country but I like them so much that I invested in a new pair. Because of their size, I have misplaced them around the house though, too. So the ability to ping the individual pieces, notify the user when disconnected, or geo-tag the last known location would be nice. Other options for the button configuration might also be helpful.

I actually like them alot, however I have ordered 2 of the openfit sets and both sets are a little uncomfortable on the right ear for me and my partner. So, this suggests a small deviation from the left ear, which I can wear all day and truly forget it's even there. my partner says the same after about an hour & half the right ear gets a little uncomfortable. I still love them and the sound and battery life is awesome! My honest opinion is they are still worth the money if you love great sound! And, if you can tweak the offending right side this is the 1 and only complaint I have.

    I probably should've gotten OpenRun

I ordered these when my OpenComm boom mic died. Since they were being touted as the 'next big thing', and they were much more expensive, they had to be better than the other models, right? And I admit, I didn't do my due diligence on the detailed specs: I was very surprised to find that they're IP54 instead of IP67 like the OpenRun, a feature that's VERY important to me. If I went running with these, they'd be dead in a month or two from sweat intrusion. The sound quality is much better than the OpenRun or OpenComm. They are very comfortable -- I sometimes forget I'm even wearing them. The UI is notably different (and, in my opinion, worse) than the OpenRun (etc). A majority of my finger presses are not recognized. The gestures are different from the OpenRun/OpenComm for some unknown reason. Setting aside my misreading of the specs, the most infuriating thing so far is that one side will fail much sooner than the other. If one is dead, they might as well both turn off. I thought I'd give the 'new thing' a try. I honestly wish I'd stuck with the tried and true. This is my 7th pair of Shokz. If they'd been my first, they'd have been my last.

    OPENFIT Pros/Cons

    2 out of 5 stars

The OPENFIT are incredibly comfortable to wear, and the sound quality is fantastic. However, the small touch button for answering calls or pausing audio can be challenging to use. Additionally, there's no way to adjust the volume directly on the OPENFIT; you must use your phone or another device for that.

Best thing is they are so comfortable I forget they are on. Worst thing is I forget I have them on. I put on sunglasses and knock them off without realizing it. Sound is great, but I do wish they fit closer to the ear. They seem to dangle without really sitting in the ear.
