Great Movie, Mediocre Blu-Ray
"Somewhere" directed by Sofia Coppola is a wonderful art film. It explores the downside of celebrity that nobody sees. However boring that may be, Coppola tries to make the audience feel the same emotions of anhedonia that the main character does. Johnny Marco, a bad boy actor, hates his life. He doesn't say it, but we can interpret it through his actions and facial expressions. It isn't until his daughter's sudden arrival that causes Johnny to re-evaluate his life and if it is even worth living. Near the end, Johnny decides that his life is nothing if he is going to keep living it as a lonely man, and so he hopes to change it all for the better. Coppola leaves us wondering what Johnny will do at the end, but we all wish that he will end up Somewhere nice. The Bonus Features on the Blu-Ray are adequate at best. There is only one featurette entitled, "Making 'Somewhere,'" that shows Coppola's inspirations for the film and how she could get a film like this made. For the only special feature, it is a pretty good watch after seeing the film. Quality wise, Blu-Ray does its job. The sound of Johnny's Ferrari speeding down an empty dirt road makes it feel like we are watching him from only a few feet away. And Coppola's visuals, with which she incorporated her father's lenses from "Rumble Fish," are also improved. Coppola has a style all her own; no film school rules, no character explanations of what they are thinking, just the world around them and how they react to it. It is truly a sight to see. Overall, I very much liked this film (and partially the Blu-Ray Disc it came on) and recommend it to anyone with the patience to sit through the life of a troubled man's quest for hope, love, and Somewhere he can call home. 4/5
