Description
This ultra-wide 20mm Prime G Lens offers outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness with a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, making it ideal for a wide variety of scenarios like landscape, street, starry-nights and environmental portraits. Furthermore, the XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear focus motorstrack focus flawlessly. The features and lightweight design make this lens ideal for videographers and vloggers as well.Advanced Optical PerformanceA state-of-the-art optical design with two AA (advanced aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements accurately reproduces point light sources with high contrast and an absolute minimum of sagittal flare for crisp, clear images of challenging subjects such as night scenes and starry skies. The Nano Anti-reflective coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting, while the fluorine coating on the front lens element repels water, oil, and other contaminants for sharp, clear images.Beautiful, Natural-Looking BokehThe deep, beautiful bokeh available with a maximum f/1.8 aperture is enhanced by a 9-blade circular aperture mechanism and precise control of spherical aberration characteristics that influence the defocused background quality. The FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens delivers the type of smooth, natural-looking bokeh that discerning users have come to expect from a G Lens. Two AA (Advanced Aspherical) Lens ElementThe 20mm f/1.8 G lens employs two precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements to maximize resolution and effectively compensates for field curvature and astigmatism that can be problematic in wide-angle lenses, achieving high corner-to-corner resolution even with the narrow depth-of-field produced at the lens’s maximum f/1.8 aperture.Three ED Glass ElementsThree ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements significantly reducing flare and ghosting by taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration (due to differences in magnification) out of the picture. Resolution and bokeh is maximized while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration right out to the image edges.f/1.8 Maximum ApertureThe f/1.8 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This bokeh effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.XD Linear Motors for Fast, Precise, Quiet FocusingThe FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens incorporates a precision internal focus mechanism consisting of two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that easily keep up with the high-speed capabilities of today’s most advanced camera bodies, taking advantage of their full autofocus speed, precision, and tracking potential to capture the most dynamic subjects. New control algorithms make it possible to drive the lens’s focus group smoothly and without delays for responsive, silent, low-vibration and continuous autofocus in both still and video modes.Nano Anti-Reflective Coating Suppresses Reflections, Flare and GhostingFlare and ghosting are often hard to avoid when shooting landscapes or outdoor scenes in strong sunlight with a wide-angle lens. Sony’s original Nano Anti-reflective Coating technology effectively suppresses internal reflections so that high-contrast, clear images can be captured even in difficult light.Compact, Lightweight DesignThis lens weighs just 0.82 pounds and measures in at only 2.89 x 3.33 inches. It’s small size and light weight enhance mobility when used with compact E-mount Full-frame or APS-C bodies and make up a well-balanced system that is ideal for use on gimbals or accessory grips.

Great Wide Angle lens

Have used this once or twice and the results are very sharp in the centre, but the corners do lag behind, hence the 4 stars instead of 5! Distortion is quite well controlled providing you are not too close to your subject.

Highly delighted with this lens and results from it are great for my use as an enthusiast photographer, I have no need for G Master lens, nor can I justify their cost as an enthusiast.

This lens is fantastic. It’s small, sharp as you’re want, quick af. It’s very expensive for a non gym prime, but it probably could have been a gm lens. If you want a uwa and don’t rely on absurdly wide for dramatic impact, or if you want to do Astro without spending thousands on a lens, this is a great shout. It’s my favourite wonky lens, and unfortunately the only one without significant flaws (35 1.8 is good for the price, but flawed). If you’re on the fence I’d take this over the 16-35pz, this lens has a wow factor that the ox just doesn’t have. I’m in the process of selling every other Sony branded lens(to buy one gm and pair it with some third party) and will keep this one, it’s a gem. I wish Sony made other non gm lenses that were at least somewhat in the realm of affordable like this one, and weren’t so terribly flawed.

This was recommended to me by several people for astrophotography and it does not disappoint. Its 1.8 aperture allows so much light and makes focusing on stars so much easier. Very little coma.

I’ve been using his about a month now and am very impressed. I was looking for a multipurpose wide angle for Astro photography that would also be useful for landscape and am very happy with this lens. 20mm is a good sweet spot between the ultra wide 14 and the somewhat 24mm. This lens does outperform the 24mm gm in terms of sharpness. Distortion is minimal, handles flare very well and little to no fringing. Perfect lens for 2 prime lens backcountry travel. This and the 55 1.8 is an extremely lightweight and compact combo.

I bought this lens last year after acquiring the my A7C. The 20mm f1.8 is outstanding particular for indoor limited light use. I personally dislike using flashes under any circumstances as it proves difficult to adjust (for me) even in post. This lens gives me the freedom to use it for limited light situations and still achieve great results.

I bought this lens to use with my Sony A7R IV. I wanted a prime lens that would produce great imagery without breaking the bank. I bought it after reading numerous online reviews and could not find a negative. I am absolutely delighted with the build quality, superb imagery and the weight I’ve owned other manufactures 20mm f1.8 lenses, but for me this is the best I could have ever hoped for. Well done Sony in producing such a great lens at an affordable price.
