Description
E-mount 400-800 mm super-telephoto zoomThe FE 400-800 F6.3-8 G OSS is Sony’s first a Lens that covers the 800 mm super-telephoto zoom range. Optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters can be used to extend that range up to 1600 mm. Super-telephoto focal lengths are ideal for birds and wildlife, sports, aircraft, and other subjects that can’t be approached closely, as well as scenes that benefit from telephoto compression.Internal zoom and optimized zoom controlInternal zoom means the length of the lens does not change while zooming, and the center of gravity stays within a small range for stable handling. Smooth, easy zoom ring rotation allows quick zooming to any focal length in the range, while careful design reduces the possibility of accidental focal length changes.Superb quality throughout the zoom rangeSix ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively control chromatic aberration that can be a problem at super-telephoto focal lengths. Flare and ghosting are also thoroughly suppressed. An 11-blade circular aperture helps to create a beautiful ball bokeh amid exceptionally smooth background bokeh when shooting with a narrow depth of field.1.7 m minimum focus at 0.23x magnificationOffering remarkable close-up capability for a super-telephoto zoom, VX8042 features a minimum focusing distance of just 1.7 m (5.58 ft) at the wide end of the zoom range and a maximum magnification of 0.23x. This level of close-up performance dramatically expands the potential uses of this versatile lens.Fast, precise AF captures quick subjectsTwo precision linear motors drive the lens’s focus group for fast, accurate focusing. Tracking easily keeps up with the 120 fps maximum burst speed of the a9 III and continues uninterrupted even while zooming so important moments are not lost. A focus-range limiter (FULL / 10m-NEAR / 8-8m) can be used to optimize operation for different subject distances. Focus breathing is suppressed for refined movie quality and quiet operation expands the gamut of possible applications.Precise manual focusFull-time DMF automatically engages manual focus when the focus ring is operated, making it easy to apply fine manual adjustments or change the focus entirely. Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly to manual focus control, with focus ring rotation translating directly to a corresponding change in focus.Minimal focus breathing for moviesAdvanced lens technology reduces focus breathing as well as focus and axial shift when zooming. Changes in angle of view and other image shifts are minimized for smooth, high-quality movie footage. The breathing compensation function provided in compatible a bodies is also supported, further reducing unwanted image shifts while focusing.Built-in Optical SteadyShotShooting handheld at super-telephoto focal lengths is made easier by the built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. MODE 2 is ideal for panned shots, while MODE 3 provides improved viewfinder stabilization for easier framing of active subjects.Durability and ease for tripod shootingThe tripod mount foot provides 1/4-20 UNC and 3/8-16 UNC screw sockets for compatibility with a wide range of tripods and can be quickly rotated for horizontal or vertical orientation. Durable components, optimized balance, and a non-removable design maximize reliability and performance in challenging conditions.Focus hold buttons offer flexible controlThree focus hold buttons at 90° increments around the lens barrel allow instant focus hold operation in either horizontal or vertical orientations, whether the camera is being held normally or upside-down. Functions other than focus hold can be assigned to the buttons as needed. Perfect for capturing every moment..

Great Lens. Crap Registration Software.
Used the lens a few times and compared it to the 200-600G which is excellent. It's a bit heavier, a fraction longer and bigger but not overtly cumbersome. I can hand-hold it and swing it about quite easily for tracking flying birds. For someone less strong or of a smaller build, it might prove a challenge for prolonged use. You need a dedicated bag, something like the Vanguard Alta Sky 66 due to its size. AF is excellent - faster, more reliable and 'stickier'. The focus limiter at 8 meters to infinity appears to work at closer distances too and seems less fussy than the 200-600. Sharpness is better too. Colour rendition is excellent and typically natural like all modern Sony lenses. I've not yet tried it with my 1.4x convertor. It would be 5 out of 5. However, the equipment registration process via the internet is as usual with Sony, very, very poor. It's almost as if they don't want you to take out an extended warranty! The software doesn't use field updates from the same entries in previous forms. The font size is tiny with light grey text on a glaring white background! I can excuse the American address template but please, not everyone lives in a bloody city! In fact this very review form is a good example of how not to design a review form. Free text field too small, dark text on white background, no auto-update of email field etc.

Excellent lens
I sold my 200-600 to upgrade to the 400-800, I’m very happy with the lens, the 800 end is nice and shape for my type of photography, which is locating birds nest. I’m not able to supply any images, due to the sensor of showing birds on nest.

Telephoto for extreme reach and wildlife
Excellent,a really a nice choice for Sony users ,althought the aperture of F8 is limiting in some scenarios ,the convenience of the zoom with reach surpasses other telephoto zoom options ,and even some primes ,the lens is built with Sony's expertise so rest assured of high quality ,internal zoom assures good balance and fast zoom throw ,coupled with Sonys superlative XD linear motors insured fast focusing ,a step up from competitors, lens hood is well designed everything has a premium feel, there will times when you may need something shorter for your needs ,but for birding wildlife where you subject can be either small or distant this lens gives you opportunitys only the best primes could achieve ,kudos to Sony it has now replaced my 200-600mm Sony g lens ,as first choice .only the weight will be a limited factor for some people.

great lens sharp with fast AF
bought new had for a couple of weeks mainly for bird photography but i think would be great for airshows, bit heavier than the 200-600 but sharper. F8 not so great on those dull days in the UK but the last couple of weeks of sun have been great, no issues at F8 and at 800 mm backgrounds blur very well.
