Description
About the Book
A new teacher in Stoney Ridge takes on the challenge to help find homes for foster children in Lancaster County. Her effort brings hope to two young girls, but complicates her budding romance.Book Synopsis
Detachment had worked well as a life strategy for horse trainer Sam Schrock. Until he met Mollie Graber . . .New to Stoney Ridge, schoolteacher Mollie has come to town for a fresh start. Aware of how fleeting and fragile life is, she wants to live it boldly and bravely. When Luke Schrock, new to his role as deacon, asks the church to take in foster girls from a group home, she's the first to raise her hand. The power of love, she believes, can pick up the dropped stitches in a child's heart and knit them back together.
Mollie envisions sleepovers and pillow fights. What the 11-year-old twins bring to her home is anything but. Visits from the sheriff at midnight. Phone calls from the school truancy officer. And then the most humiliating moment of all: the girls accuse Mollie of drug addiction.
There's only one thing that breaks through the girls' hard shell--an interest in horses. Reluctantly and skeptically, Sam Schrock gets drawn into Mollie's chaotic life. What he didn't expect was for love to knit together the dropped stitches in his own heart . . . just in time.
Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to the little Amish church of Stoney Ridge for a touching story of the power of love.

Suzanne Woods Fisher is a noted author of Amish fiction because of her knowledge of the Amish faith and lifestyle and she also understands that the Amish people aren't immune to the tempations and worries of the outside world. Stitches in Time deals with some heavy subjects: addiction, the increasing need of foster care in our society, and the dreaded C word: cancer. It isn't, howerver, a book of doom and gloom because hope and faith are very prevalent throughout this story. Fisher uses both Bible scripture and Amish sayings to relate the depth of the Amish faith and the strength of their absolute trust in God's Providence and I found my own faith boosted as I read them.
This is the second book of The Deacon's Family series and, even though I haven't read the first, I never felt lost in this story. Part of this is due to the Cast of Characters that Fisher lists in the front and part is her ability to weave past events into the present storyline. I wasn't familiar with Luke Schrocks' previous problems or his wife Izzy's past but Fisher made it easy for me to see how they were affecting the present and she also explained their previous relationship with Fern Lapp. Fern is a treasure and I especially loved her very wise observations about God, faith, and life in general.
I am so in love with this book! Stitches in Time is excellent Christian fiction and I highly recommend it for all who enjoy reading about the Amish. I am giving it 5 Stars and I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

There was so much to love in Stitches in Time, the second installment of the Deacon's Family series by Suzanne Woods Fisher. First of all, the ending. It made me want to jump, and shout, and celebrate! Know that this was a great book, from beginning to end. It takes place in Stoney Ridge, a fictional town in Lancaster County, PA. That place is a community that feels like home when I pick up one of Fisher's books. There are stories to remember and characters to regain an acquaintance with each time I read a Stoney Ridge book.
There were some characters to meet for the first time, and others whose stories make me love them even more. They made me laugh with them, and appreciate kindness, and experience longing with them in a book that was comfortable and easy to read. Yet for all the nostalgia, this book does work as a stand-alone.
As the story moved along, I found myself drawn to the good advice that the characters sought from their mentors. "I start every morning with a question-'Lord, what do you want me to do today?'" More than once throughout the book I was spiritually encouraged. From beginning to end, this was a great book, and I highly recommend it-even if Amish fiction isn't your thing.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher, Revell, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Stitches in Time is another great read by one of my favorite authors. Suzanne Woods Fisher has created wonderful characters that are likable and relatable. Luke, formerly a troubled young man, is now married and beginning to allay the distrust of others in the community. Then very unexpectedly, he is chosen for a leadership role--and the story begins! There are struggles with a member who drinks too much, the promises to keep regarding emptying the foster care system, the strain on his marriage. The author, with humor and beautiful word pictures, does a fantastic job bringing these scenes to life. Some of the characters are from previous books and it is pleasant to see them again, especially Bishop David and Aunt Fern, both such wise and kind people who speak life into others' lives. I loved how the 23rd Psalm is used throughout the book to illustrate different scenarios as Izzy shepherds her flock of sheep. Another theme throughout the story is related to knitting. Being a person who knits, I liked her allegorical references to dropped stitches and the need to catch those stitches in time. The book focuses on foster care and Fisher realistically portrays some of the problems related to this societal issue. At the end of the book, the author has discussion questions and a brief history of foster care. She also dispels myths that people have regarding foster care and gives suggestions as to how readers can volunteer to help children in need. Readers who like Amish fiction and stories full of family, friends, and faith will not want to miss Stitches in Time. I received a complimentary copy of this book via CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own. This review is part of a CelebrateLit blog tour.
