Q: are they motion activated? do i have to turn on and off or are they on a 6/18 built in timer?

A: There is a steady-on setting and a dark-activated setting (which doesn't require it to be very dark). I hung mine in the shrubbery outside, and they came on automatically at dusk.

These are not worth $30 for a 3-pack, but I'm fairly happy with them for the reduced price I paid. Some notes: 1. The product photos are a bit deceptive; the pupils are not as dark as shown, and they don't move across the eye, just blink from left to right and back (there are two little LED lights inside and a fixed oval disc that casts a shadow to form the pupil). But they still look pretty good peeking out of the bushes. 2. You will need a tiny screwdriver to open the battery compartment. 3.You have to push the hooks in until they snap a second time--and then they don't come out, which means you can't fit them all back into the box for storage.

Design flaw
The hooks do not hold the eyes. The hooks kept slipping out of hole and the lights fall to the floor. Had to return.

I didn't realize you can move the eyebrows to creat edifferent expressions. These are really funny and will look great peeping out of my bushes at Halloween!

Not worth it
These are cute and the animation works, but I bought 2 packs and of the 6, only 4 are useable. They hang by a hook that inserts into the top of each eye. Right out of the box one of the hooks was too loose inside the hole. By the time I hung them, another one fell off the hook and will not reconnect. I do not think the others will last long. There is no other way to hang them besides the hooks.

I bought all three differ
I bought all three different sets of flashing peeping eyes, and I loved each set (totaling 9 pairs of eyes). My favorite set is the one with sound in addition to blinking and flashing. I would definitely buy these again, especially since the batteries lasted a long time too!

I'm absolutely obsessed with it. The pictures really don't do it justice—it looks fantastic in person. Setting it up was super quick and easy. I hope the batteries last for a long time!
