Homesteading [hohm-sted-ing]noun
- an act or instance of establishing a homestead.
- the act of loving where you live so much that you actively ignore the fact that your house is trying to kill you on a regular basis.
For Kathi Lipp and her husband, Roger, buying a house in one of the most remote parts of Northern California was never part of the plan; many of life's biggest, most rewarding adventures rarely are. Kathi shares the hard-won wisdom she's gained on her homestead journey to help you accomplish more at home, gain fresh perspective, and give yourself grace in the process. Here's a handful of the lessons Kathi shares:
- Prepare before the need arises
- Everything is always in process, including us
- Your best household solution is time and patience
- You don't have to do everything the hard way
- Be open to new and better ways of doing things
- A lot of small changes make a huge difference.
Highly practical, humorous, and inspirational, The Accidental Homesteader will encourage you to live with more peace, joy, and contentment.

As someone who has always loved the city, but has been influenced by her husband to be more “country” and now lives in a rural community, I appreciated Kathi Lipp’s approach in which she wrote The Accidental Homesteader. Instead of pitting city vs.country, Kathi showed how one can love where they are at, because that is where they have been called to be. The Accidental Homesteader is full of real life examples of how adaptable we are as individuals, which is inspiring for anyone who has been wanting to make a big change in their life, feeling called in a different direction than expected or just wanting to return to a simpler way of life. In a world where convenience is often the priority, Kathi shows readers how convenience is more than drive through fast food and the internet at our finger tips. It is assessing one’s fridge each week and using up items before buying new, making big batches of soup to freeze, creating lists and running all errands on one day and establishing routines that create a day of rest within the week. Whether you ever become a homesteader or not, Kathi’s personal stories of mishaps, memories and what you can make will inspire any reader to be bold in their journey, “whether it’s to the mountains or your own backyard, to live life on the terms that God and you decide are best for you to live, serve, love others, and grow as a person.”
