About the Author

Robert Henri (1865-1929) studied art in Philadelphia and Paris. He embraced Impressionism as a student and later, as a leader of the Ashcan School, rejected it in pursuit of a more truthful reality. He taught at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the Art Students League of New York, developing a reputation as a teacher who encouraged independent thought in his students. The Art Spirit, originally published in 1923, is a collection of Henri's thoughts by former pupil Margery Ryerson.
