Description

Book Synopsis

Written by a true national security insider, this high-stakes thriller follows a seasoned LAPD detective who unravels a catastrophic conspiracy linking a stadium assassination to a shadow war orchestrated by Beijing. It is a terrifyingly plausible look at the fragility of American power when threatened by enemies both foreign and domestic.

A single bullet is all it takes to break a nation.

A devastating attack at a packed Los Angeles stadium leaves the American government shattered. The country is thrown into immediate chaos. LAPD Detective Jack Worker thought his days in clandestine operations were permanently buried in the past. But when he recognizes the signature of a phantom assassin, he is pulled back into a world of shadows and deceit.

Jack is hunting a ghost. His target is a lethal professional who leaves no evidence and always stays one step ahead. The pursuit drags Jack from pristine hotel suites to the corrupt, power hungry corridors of Washington. He soon discovers that the trigger was pulled by foreign operatives, but the door was unlocked by someone inside the house.

Surrounded by morally gray characters who view treason as just another political strategy, Jack finds himself trapped in a deadly cat and mouse game. The stakes are total global war. With time running out and the truth hidden behind layers of lies, he must decide what he is willing to sacrifice to save a broken system.

For fans of David Baldacci and Vince Flynn featuring morally gray characters, a deadly cat and mouse game, and high stakes political intrigue.

About the Author

Roger Kelly Smith holds advanced degrees in international politics from the London School of Economics (MSc) and Georgetown University (Ph.D.); in addition, he earned a law degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

He taught international politics and American defense policy at the University of Massachusetts, while serving as the executive director of the Aspen Strategy Group, a nonpartisan Aspen Institute think tank examining national security matters. Concurrent with his Aspen appointment, he was a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Center for International Affairs.

He has edited and contributed to collected works on the Gulf War, American grand strategy, and nuclear, chemical, and ballistic missile proliferation, and has published peer-reviewed articles on nuclear arms control in scholarly journals in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Before entering public service with the California Court of Appeal, he was in private practice as a civil litigator with several international law firms. His first novel, No Place to Die, a near future spy thriller, is about Jack Worker's son, Jan, a Delta operator seconded to the CIA to guard a high-value Chinese defector.
