Klassen's spare gouache and digital illustrations in a quiet black, brown, and white palette (contrasted with Laszlo's light blue footy pajamas and the yellow light bulb) are well suited for a book about the unseen. Using simple black lines and color contrasts to provide atmosphere and depth, Klassen captures the essence of Snicket's story. --The Horn Book, starred review Laszlo, though a new creation for this story, somehow seems satisfyingly familiar.--Kirkus Reviews

I bought this to help my 3 year old with her fear of the dark. I took a chance despite reviews about children being scared by the book and was very glad as I read through it before bedtime. I knew it was just the kind of story to help her and it seriously did solve the problem. She’s a romantic little dreamer and personifying the dark was just what she needed. Never cried at bedtime about the dark again. However… my 4.5 year old, my little analytical scientist who’s never been afraid of the dark, was made VERY uncomfortable by this book and it actually caused an unease for her around the darkness, especially in the basement. As an adult reading it, who’s temperament is somewhere between the two, I LOVE it. It’s wonderful storytelling both warmly charming and at times unsettlingly intriguing. But the end is wrapped up nicely so you’re snuggling down with a smile and a wink, forgetting you were ever chilled as the story progressed.
