Description

About the Book

Libraries, musicologists, and Deadheads alike will want a copy of this comprehensive annotated bibliography that contains most of what has been written over the past 30 years about this legendary American musical institution and its fans, the Deadheads. The approximately 4,000 annotations serve as a chronolgical history, an aid to researchers, and a guide for fans and collectors. The Grateful Dead appeared on the San Francisco music scene in 1965, and over the course of their career inspired a wide array of writing. This work includes the entire spectrum.

The work includes every book published about the band, every article that appeared in a major magazine or journal, chapters and entries in books, and articles from The San Francisco Chronicle and The San Francisco Examiner newspapers. Several magazines in their entirety were devoted (and remain devoted) to following the band, and this bibliography chronicles the material that appeared in those fan magazines. In addition to author, subject, and title indexes, an index to artists and photographers is included, since the Grateful Dead inspired a large body of artistic and photographic work.

Review Quotes

"For 30 years, the Grateful Dead made a glorious call into the world. David Dodd and Robert Weiner's annotated bibliography is the world's answer, chronicled with impeccable scholarship and a love for their subject that shines through in every line. Catalogued here, for future researchers and Deadheads-to-come, are the interviews and scribes, the pop-crit ruminations and the academic nets cast, the nearly forgotten tales of would-be anthropologists gone native--a magician's library of hilarious and significant lore rescued from the abyss: all the luminous ephemera and era-defining milestones accumulated as the Dead streaked through the American sky on the trail of the Wild Good."- Steve Silberman coauthor of Skeleton Key: A Dictionary for Deadheads

"If you want to learn the printed history of the Grateful Dead, read David Dodd and Robert Weiner's bibliography. It's a long strange trip, and they're the librarians for it."-Dennis McNally Grateful Dead publicist and official historian

"What an amazing work--a labor of love and a definitive record. I had a feeling someone was out there, someone noticed...Thanks for collecting all the scattered bones, for making history come alive. And thanks for the memories."-Mickey Hart Grateful Dead drummer

"A godsend for Grateful Dead enthusiasts, authors Dodd and Weiner have compiled a concise index that is more than just a handy guide to the most significant articles written about the band and the cultural milieu that surrounded it....Kudos to [the authors] for their painstakingly extensive research."-Relix

"Dodd and Weiner have combined the best tenets of bibliography, librarianship, and group rock fandom in their creation of this work....[A] well-executed bibliography, [and] one that should act as a model for others."-Reference & User Services Quarterly

"The abundance of written and recorded Grateful Dead material makes the band a terrific topic for an annotated bibliography....[T]his volume takes an important step in the bibliographic control of this sometimes ephemeral material....In all, this is an excellent work."-ARBA
