About the Book
A clever mouse uses his imagination to conjure up a vicious "gruffalo" to ruin the appetites of the hungry woodland animals he meets. Full color.Book Synopsis
Julia Donaldson's trademark rhyming text and Axel Scheffler's brilliant, characterful illustrations come together in this perfect read aloud A mouse is taking a stroll through the deep, dark wood when along comes a hungry fox, then an owl, and then a snake. The mouse is good enough to eat but smart enough to know this, so he invents . . . the gruffalo! As Mouse explains, the gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose. But Mouse has no worry to show. After all, there's no such thing as a gruffalo. . . .Review Quotes

I really love the idea of this book—a mouse pretends to be meeting a “gruffalo” (a creature it made up) to scare away other animals from eating the mouse. Then it actually meets a gruffalo, and convinces the creature that all the other animals are scared of the mouse (they are actually scared of the gruffalo). But the mouse double fools everyone so now the gruffalo leaves the mouse alone too. It unwinds in a fun and creative way, and it’s a unique idea with a lot of fun pictures and details. But I find that actually following the storyline I described above is confusing for my young child (three years). It might be better for a slightly older child, but then it probably doesn’t need to be a board book.
GREAT story

Out of every book I own (which is a lot), this is one of my favorites. What a lovely story, with a twist at the end. My mother who is a very respected elementary school teacher was also impressed with it. 10/10 buy it!

We bought Room on the Broom at Halloween and my boys, 3 and 5, loved it. The three year-old pointed to The Gruffalo on the back cover and so I waited for the buy 2, get 1 deal at Target and ordered it. They love it too and as an adult, I love how clever the mouse it. Very entertaining.

My 3yo likes this book (though it’s almost a bit “scary” for her). I know this is a beloved book but I don’t personally care for the message

My 22 month old just loves these books by Julia. Fun, lilting story with just the right amount of words on each page to keep her attention.

My son loves this book and we read it often. It’s a cute story with some colorful characters and a witty little mouse.
Funny, but needed a little explaining.

Funny book. However, I did have to explain to my 3-year-old that all those animals were trying to eat the mouse and not just being nice and inviting him over for tea/lunch,etc since the language they use is very benign ("the mouse looked good" aka they want to eat the mouse). Also had to find a reason why the mouse scared off the gruffalo in the end and why they didn't become friends.

I like the story and pictures in the book and would give it 5 stars. I dock a point as Target shows the old cover of the book, however, you get the new unattractive red cover with gruffalo.

This is one of my children's all time favorite books. So much so, that this mama has it completely memorized! Must have for every child's library. Makes a great gift!
